Pollion by Quanyails Pollion by Quanyails
This was my submission for Smogon's 24th Create-a-Pokemon Project! The concept was a Pokemon that could abuse two weathers, and we designed a Pokemon that could either self-abuse Drought or use Trace to beat threats to Sand teams!

For the concept, I designed a dandelion. Here's the description of the design I posted over at Smogon:
I stumbled upon this concept when sketching out lions crossed with fruits, when I realized that dandelions are a plant with fanciful-looking seeds, and a dandy is a fancy person. A dandy lion fits very naturally with Grass/Fairy, so I went for it!

I added a few other design elements to mesh concepts together. The dandelion puffs form the dandy lion's fluff. The lion's dewclaws give the impression of cufflinks. A boutonniere is a great grassy and fairy-like addition to a fancy feline's ensemble. As "dandelion" originates from "lion's tooth", the lion has cute little fangs. :P

I made sure dandy lion was a sunny creature. Lions, in contrast to other big cats, are active during the day. Additionally, they live in the savannah, a temperate region between a forest and desert. The eyes on the design are colored like the desert dandelion, which are yellow with a red center. In general, dandelion flowers invoke sun imagery.
The design took second place in the polls, which surprised me! I wasn't sure how voters felt about the design. In the past, my designs have fluctuated wildly in ranking, but I know that part of that is at least how well the design fits the Pokemon's attributes. Additionally, I often feel like I'm better at technique than at design. I always ask myself "Why should I add this?", while the artists that I look up to seem to know naturally. Sometimes people like my submissions. Sometimes they don't. I still don't "know" what makes a good design, but I'm still learning, and the CAP community helps a lot with that. :)

In addition, during the process of the art stage, I did my best to help other people with their designs. I believe that the reason why CAP 24's art polls were so tight was because of how people were happily helping each other improve their designs, so voters liked more of them than past polls. I think this has been one of my favorite CAPs to partake in!

The only supporting art I made of the design were pencil sketches, so I don't feel like they're worth submitting to dA. :T You can see them in this post, if you're curious. :)

I had originally planned on using "Floraloof" (floral + aloof + poof) as the name of the design, but people on the CAP Discord server were discussing other possible names. ashta thought of "Pollion" (pollen + lion), and Sgt.Moose suggested "Apollion" (Apollo + pollen + lion). I liked both, but reachzero and Kadew-C mentioned how "Apollion" is very similar to "Apollyon" (Abaddon), which is not the allusion I want to have come across! So "Pollion" it was. :D

Thank you. I think Pipotchi's baobab was a better fit, regardless. :)

Yep! I work at 2x size so it's easier to draw the details (like the lines on the seed stems) before downsizing it for submission. :)
