The Cast Room Fracture Team

The venerable Dr. Harrison Tan M.D. currently heads the Orthopedics Division at Grand Oaks Hospital, the busiest in town. With over twenty years of experience, he is known to his staff as a bit of a disciplinarian and perfectionist but is often praised by his patients for his attention to detail, treating the plaster cast as both a medical appliance as well as a work of art. Additionally, his stern but confident bedside manner provides badly needed reassurance for recovering patients. To the credit of his elite, hand-picked fracture team, they've all willingly given up their Friday evenings to make sure this sudden influx of patients are well taken care of.

The Doctor knows full well that the unfortunate patient will be seen wearing his handiwork for months and a quick wrap job like other hospitals simply won't do.  In Shellie's case, he has removed her existing cast in favor of a new and reinforced full leg cast that encompasses existing as well as new injuries. A second cast of equal thickness on Shellie's right arm completes the set. Both have been double-padded for comfort, a trademark of this Fracture Team. While this has resulted in a cast which is significantly larger, thicker and heavier than her previous one, it does a very good job of future-proofing these casts until their expected removal.

As Shellie drifts in and out of consciousness, the final roll of plaster is laminated into a creamy-smooth white outer shell by the Fracture Team. A sudden warmth of setting plaster provides a jarring contrast to the chilly room. Sharp pains now fade into a dull but throbbing ache as the medication takes effect. Shellie realizes the severity of her situation as Nurse Flores' firm yet comforting hold on her keeps her still as the plaster sets. Across blurred vision, it seems almost as if her entire right side is now a full sheet of white.

What had happened? Did she slip on the University stairs? Are her classmates alright? Why is it so cold in here?

These questions, along with intense feelings of vulnerability, swirl in Shellie's head as exhaustion and a strong dose of pain killers soon pull her back to unconsciousness.

Dr. Tan finishes up by tossing away his rubber gloves, stating that Shellie should be good as new... in a few months.

Welcome to Season 2!

This is my brand new custom 3D Plaster Long Arm and Long Leg Cast models... quite tedious to get it looking right. The plaster lumps, swirls, and bumps are all sculpted and baked into displacement maps for a more realistic depiction of plaster. It's also extra bulky and thick like the way they used to make them. As for the splatters... from someone who has worked with plaster many times, it really does get this messy with little flecks of plaster all over the place.
