qualia - the subjective qualities of conscious experience (plural of the Latin singular quale, ‘of what kind’); aesthesis - sensory experience
light, colour, texture, shape, tone... the 'qualia' of visual aesthetic experience, the physical attributes of existence that feeds perception of space and how we move through it.
qualia are not colour, not texture, not shape, but our reactions to colour, to texture, to shape... qualia are the threads that weave together to form the fabric of reality. They are the raw materials of the Artist.
displaced qualia spins the familiar - faces, flora, fauna, household goods - questioning our aesthetic response to everyday objects that surround us. I capture a natural/realist angle of existence with a Canon DSLR then displace the qualia of that image using digital image manipulation in Photoshop. By generating an unexpected juxtaposition of familiar colours, shapes, tones, and textures, I ask the viewer to reflect on the way in which they process external stimuli and renegotiate their relationship with the external world.
~note~ This profile was created to showcase the displaced qualia project. For photography project captured qualia see
