Wakey, wakey, rise and shine.
Clean socks scampering down,
curious green eyes alive and searching.
The world is a very small place.
But today it gets a bit bigger, a whole new school
and a sunny day of new experiences.
Put on the new backpack, blue fabric and wax wings.
Burnt toast and sugary cereal, and some for the road,
for a growing boy who needs his protein.
So much curiosity for such a small frame.
The yellow of the school bus blends in invisibly,
swallowed by the brilliant white sun of the new day.
Hurry up, it's nearly time to go.
You can't stay here forever, you know, and besides
it's a wonderful day outside.
Tele says tomorrow is cloudy.
New things become routine, calm down, become normal,
accepting the compromise of the ol' buttermilk sky.
Out the door with you, time to go.
Remember to be nice, to pay attention, and as always
be home before the sun sets.
