The Waif and the Shoreman by Pyrosity The Waif and the Shoreman by Pyrosity
The final illustration; I didn't have time to do two companion pieces (as per the assignment) but fortunately my instructor is taking into account the vast amount of preliminary and process work I showed her.
Assignment was to create an anthropomorphic character and do two full value illustrations depicting them.

The gist of the narrative is that the meerkat is a waif (by the nautical definition), who is in the unfortunate circumstance of having lost all her possessions save for a scarf, and is wandering aimlessly lost along the shorelines in a heavy wind when she comes to a pier. The shoreman is standing guard by the pier at night when she comes by. He takes her in under the awning of the building, out of the wind and offers to hold the lantern for her while she sleeps until dawn under the cover of the building.

The second illustration would have been similar to the rough drawing on the bottom you see here; [link] but as I said, I ran out of time and chose to focus on finishing the first in full.

Regardless, this was one of the most fun, and rewarding projects I've ever worked on. I've probably spent more hours on this project than any single other in recent years, and have gained a lot of experience with photoshop as well as learned a great many other things. It really stretched my abilities! :]

First of all I really love the different look and feel to both character, especially the shoreguard with his calm yet concerned expression. the colouring style looks great too, so smooth and conforting to look at, I especially like how the highlighing done with a bight white light the parts directly under the lamp light
