Prop plane sketches by Pyrosity Prop plane sketches by Pyrosity
I've recently been really digging classic world-war era prop planes. Playing IL-2 might have had something to do with that :D

That thing looks like a light-plane that somebody strapped some 30 cal machine guns and 20 mm cannons on.

Gotta love those cannons >:3

It's so incredibly satisfying to plow your way through a formation of enemy planes with a barrage of combined cannon and MG fire, ripping off wings, elevators, bits and pieces, and blowing engines, then pulling off to watch them barrel down into the ground.

Lmao, oh man. I have to try installing Combat Flight Sim III on Vista now. My favorite trick- since I generally fly some variant of the Supermarine Spitfire which is not the most powerful plane or has the most ammo- is to put a few rounds through their radiator (assuming it's a water cooled plane) then run away, because I can outmaneuver ANYONE's ass in that thing.

Hehe :D I've gotta give one of those Spitfires a fly sometime. Thing about IL-2 is though, they have like umpteen million variations of some planes, hard to pick out which one to fly.

What would be fun is to go through most of the planes and see which ones I like flying best, and make more custom skins for 'em :)

It's wonderful! People say it's the quintessential WWII combat sim, I'd probably agree (even though I haven't played any others). Goes for about 10 on steam. There's also this mod people put together that allows you to fly every plane in the game - some were only available to the AI/computer players.

I'll look into it. I have $10, a Joystick, and a hankerin' for taking the Luft out of the Luftwaffe.

They can be addictive for sure. I think it is the nostalgia that lures me.

I think part of it is the "tactile" connection you get with props versus jet engines. Jets are sweet, but they don't have the sort of raw personality or simple, reliable feel of prop engines. Jets are more... high, tech, I guess is what I'm getting at. It's not near as easy to comprehend exactly how jet engines work even when looking at diagrams and reading about their function.
