It was 1:15 AM at the Sunfield-Purplescale household, and everyone was sound asleep, including 32-year-old Durple. That was, until he was woken up by one of his toddler daughters bawling.
Recognizing the cries to be Sunflower’s, Durple got up and walked to her shared bedroom with Terra. Sunflower was crying her eyes out, while Terra miraculously wasn’t woken up by it. The purple dragon walked over to Sunflower’s crib and picked her up before cradling her.
“Sunflower...Sunny...Shhhhh...Shh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh...It’s okay...Daddy’s here...It’s okay...” Durple soothed. “What’s wrong, huh?”
Sunflower was still crying through her pacifier, and Durple noticed that she was curled up a bit in his arms, so it didn’t take too long to notice what was going on.
“Oh, you’re having cramps, huh?” asked Durple. “Shhhhhh...I know, I know...It’s okay...” he adjusted his youngest daughter in his arms so that he could have her little head resting in his chest. Soon Sunflower began to calm down as she listened to Durple’s heartbeat, while also feeling the warmth of his body at the same time, which was helping with her colic.
“There you go...Good girl...Shhhhh...” Durple soothed as he rubbed her back while going to sit in the rocking chair. As he rocked his youngest, he remembered a lullaby his mother would sing when he was a hatchling. So he decided to sing it to her.
Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you’ve been asking me
I think you know what I’ve been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away
Goodnight, my angel
Now it’s time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I’m rocking you to sleep
The water’s dark and deep
Inside this ancient heart
You’ll always be a part of me
The song helped Sunflower calm down, and she closed her eyes and fell asleep in Durple’s arms, who smiled upon seeing how peaceful his daughter is. After kissing her forehead, he carried her back to her crib and carefully set her down, before covering her up with the blanket.
“Goodnight, sweetie...” he said softly. Just when he was about to leave the room, Sunflower began crying again. She must have sensed that Durple was leaving and began crying out to him, not wanting to be alone at the moment.
Durple walked back to her crib and picked her up while covering her up with the blanket. “Okay, okay...You can sleep with Daddy and Papa tonight...Oh, my poor baby...”
He knew that Sunflower usually isn’t like this, but since she was having colics and was overall fussy because of it, she needed her daddy a bit more than usual. So Durple held her as he picked up the baby lounger from under her crib and took her to his room.
Once he arrived, he set the lounger down on the bed between him and Simon, who was still asleep, but woke up upon feeling the lounger being set next to him.
“Hmm? What?” asked Simon. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, everything’s fine.” assured Durple. “Sunflower just needed Daddy.”
“Oh okay.” replied Simon, watching as Durple set Sunflower down in the lounger and tucked her in, and the yellow alien then kissed her forehead. Now that she was in the presence and comfort of her daddies, Sunflower settled down and fell asleep. Simon and Durple each put a hand on her and they fell asleep, holding their daughter close for the rest of the night.
Sometimes, all a child needs is a father’s love to help them feel better, and it's great that the Sunfield-Purplescale kids have two fathers who would sacrifice their own sleep and comfort to help their babies. Durple will especially do anything for his babies, and they love him for that.
