Taking a more personal look at the people behind the deviantART admin symbols.
How did you first discover deviantART?
I was introduced by a friend who signed up to the site in America as part of an Art Assignment - I came with one name and kept it ever since!
What was it about dA that made you want to stay?
I didn't initially stay. I signed up and then did nothing for years. And then after the July 7 bombings in the UK I was personally involved in a certain way, and was prompted to write a poem. It became my first deviation and brought me alot of positive feedback and support - that community feeling made me stay.
What is the story behind your username?
My name is Katy and my surname begins with a D - So I just gave myself a nickname, added the dash...et voila!
What do you remember of your childhood in regards to art?
I was always encouraged to develop artistically. I started learning the piano at age four and from there my parents helped and prompted me to explore all kinds of arts. I taught myself to draw with Mark Kistlers books - he's amazing! (I can't draw so much now though!)
Was there anything or anyone in particular that prompted your choice of art form?
Nothing at all really. I decided one day that I wanted a D-SLR without even knowing what it was. I then researched it and ended up getting one - and from there the Photography developed. As for Literature, I've always used writing as an outlet for my feelings.
Who or what motivates you to continue creating?
Throughout my artistic years, this community has prompted me to keep creating, the support and encouragement has always meant alot and without that I wouldn't do half the things that I do. As of late, and in recent months my partner Fluxicity has inspired alot of my work. His support and the inspiration I gain from his own work never cease to keep me creating.
Of your own work, which has the most meaning to you and why?
Dear Katy: Younger SelfDear Katy,
I'm looking back at you, dwelling there in our past. I'm looking from a place that it's taken a long time to reach, a place that at one point, you never thought you'd get to. Like right now. You there, in the past, I know exactly what you are thinking. I can see you frowning back at me, one eyebrow tilted slightly in indignation. How dare this stranger approach me in such a stark manner.
You wrote so often to me, in your poems and your thoughts, so it's only fair that I return the gesture now. As they say...better late than never. And maybe I'm not too late...
I'd like to tell you so many things to save you heartache. Because I know what's going to happen to you tomorrow...next month...and next year. I can see the scenes vividly in my mind and with every strike I flinch because I know your pain. You are an old head on young shoulders my dear self, and that will be your downfall on occasion.
You're going to fall hard because your heart is in the right plac
This piece means so much to me because it came straight from my heart. I wrote it inspired by Stephen Fry's letter to his younger self - and from my letter came the idea to create a Deviantart Competition. The response was incredible, and the emotions that people felt writing the letters was inspiring and warming. I'll never forget the power that people felt they had from writing a letter to their younger self - incredible. Which is why I'm working on a second contest...
What are the duties and title of your role as an admin of deviantART?
At the moment I'm a Gallery Moderator for Abstract and Surreal Photography. That means promoting and spreading awareness of what Abstract and Surreal work is, and doing this through effective news and competitions as well as awarding Daily Deviations in that area. Aside from this I run several groups with a few others.
What would you like to achieve in the long term and short term on dA? In life?
I think I've achieved a couple of my secret goals - to become a senior - I did that last year, and to achieve recognition for my writing. I also wanted to become a Gallery Moderator, and managed that this year! My final goal would be to achieve some recognition for my Photograpy. In life...that's too complicated!
What type of music do you listen to? (Specific groups/artists?)
I really enjoy Ludovico Einaudi's music - classical pianist with a hint of modernism. It's perfect
What are your pet peeves on dA and in general?
Drama! I think that's what most people say though. But yes, Drama and also bugs!
Something random about yourself that you wish to share?
I'm a classically trained Pianist
What tips can you offer to better oneself in his or her art? In
In Art? Don't let the stats get you down. Whether it be here, at a gallery or in general - don't let others direct how you perform and how you create. Be yourself. In life - Live it!
Call off the searchWhen I first heard about love
I began my search,
Looking for the missing piece,
to fill my heart,
But true lovers never first time meet,
They are inside each other,
From the start.
What does ART mean to you?
Art means everything to me. Through Art I've managed to save myself from many dark days, made some fantastic friends and found a wonderful Partner
Is there anything else you wish to say?
Thank you for this interview PurpelBlur and everything you do here
Thank you Kaz-D for your passion and inspiration.
I do not know your name today I do not know your name today,
Nor the colour of your eyes,
But I see you in the living men,
Adorned with polished pride.
I do not know your name today,
Nor the colour of your skin,
But I see you in the marching bands,
The tap of drumsticks upon tin.
I do not know your name today,
Nor where you died in fight,
But I know this, that you aren't lost,
As we remember you tonight.
I do not know your name today,
Or whether you fought through choice,
But be you volunteer or commandeer
Our unity today will be your voice.
IronyA forbidden hand on her thigh,
Tilted the room to right angles,
On the first day of spring.
An illicit phonecall last night,
Soon brought him to her bed,
Whilst her husband works away.
She finds a pile of money later on,
Nestled in sheets that hold secrets,
No more than 80 pence.
Her heart jumps at the mockery,
Until she realises the loose change
Fell innocently from his jeans.
She rests it upon the window sill,
It remains until her husband returns,
And he pockets it quickly.
Later that night he quietly leaves,
Jogging to the payhone, coins in hand,
He silently dials his mistress.
