Welp, the bitch passed. For now.
It's up for a final round of votes in Januari.
Thankfully there are already people wondering how to actually IMPLEMENT the law, only now realizing that what they want is expensive, unconstitutional, or downright impossible. Which is was experts have said from the beginning, but why listen to people who actually know their stuff, right.
Quick recap, for those who don't know or forgot: The new law proposal overprotects copyright to a point where it becomes almost impossible to share stuff online, even your own work!
Algorithms will be used to ensure platforms don't spread stolen content, but algorithms don't know actual theft from sharing, or parody, or a simple likeness. Not to mention, this same law wants to put a tax on hyperlinking, actively working against
proper sourcing to the original.
If this law goes through, chances are high that:
-Your youtube account will get blocked because you made a remix or AMV
-Your blog gets shut down because you used a company picture for a review
-Your DA gets reported for drawing an OC that bears the resemblance of an existing character
-Fanfiction.net & Archive of Our Own become inaccessible from within the EU
-and so on.
The fight is not over yet. Please help however you can: tweet, mail, call, spread the word!
Far too many people still aren't even AWARE of this law (especially the slightly tech-impaired). Don't just tell your friends- tell your family, teachers, anyone who may not have heard.saveyourinternet.eu/savethelink.org/www.change.org/p/european-parl…
