As told in Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch (or the Mabinogion), a collection of Welsh legends:

At the Black Stone in Llanfair in Arfon, the great sow Henwen gave birth to a kitten (after having previously birthed a wolf-cub and an eagle). Coll mab Collfrewy was the swineherd, and when he picked up this ferocious little kitten, ball of scratching and fur and claws, and Coll hurled it into the sea to drown.

The kitten clung to life as fiercely as it had clawed at Coll, and managed to survive and swim to shore at Anglesey, where it was discovered and raised by the sons of Palug. (Hence the name Cath Palug, "Palug's Cat", although it is sometimes thought to be translated as "clawing cat" as well.)

It is said that this Cath Palug grew to become an enormous beast who terrorized the surrounding lands. When word came of the ravages, King Arthur sent his knight Sir Cai to dispatch the giant cat. Nine-score warriors and champions rode alongside Cai...and none of them returned, save Cai. How the confrontation went - whether Cai slew Cath Palug, or simply fled...the poems and stories do not say.

Wow, now I know where Lloyd Alexander got the concept of Llyan in the Prydain chronicles. XD I really like your synopsis, it reminded me how much I've wanted to read the Mabinogion. Very lovely image. =D

This piece has a nice ethereal nighttime or dream like quality that I find rather beautiful and your range of values or working pretty well as well. I do feel that there is a bit of a disconnect between the knights and the foreground characters and this weakens the piece slightly for me. Other than that this is a lovely piece.

What a great depiction! I love how your pictures always tell entire stories, a bit like ancient wall frescoes.

I've just made my way through the Mabinogion as well, but I have to say that a lot of the stories were just plain weird to me. I skipped the one of Kilhwch and Olwen, for example (those three pages of nothing but names scared me off). But interesting to see where Lloyd Alexander got some of his Prydain ideas from - I hadn't encountered the sow Henwen in the Mabinogion until now.

Can you recommend a Mabinogion version, by the way? I read the translation by Lady Guest, and although I'm Shakespeare-tested, I found it rather hard to get through.

Lovely watercolour work as always! :)
