Diners & Drive-ins: Your guide to cool and unique eateries

by Ed Wolfe

Hello Fellow canns, this month I'll be spotlighting a neat little drive-in located at 639 E. Buena Vista Ave in Visalia, California. The Double D is a 1950's themed drive-in restaurant opened in 1980. Owned by Paul Krouse the place is a blast from the past, he perfectly repicated a 50's drive-in right down to the last detail. It offers full carhop service, an inside dining area and a covered picnic table seating outside. The menu offerings consist of typical drive-in fare and ice cream treats including burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, seafood dinners, fried foods, kids baskets, fried dough pizza and more. Dugs Ice Cream (hard serve), 24 flavors of soft serve, Pepsi products and L&R Coffee are also served here. The prices are moderate and fair for what you get.

I went inside to check out the diner part of DD's, the attention to detail was amazing. After looking at the menu I decided to ordered their Fish'N'Tits meal (unique to DD's) it consists of large Pepsi and deep fried breasts served with homemade chips. The Fish'N'Tits were really good. They were plump and juicy, coated with a crispy breading that had a taste that remided me of haddock and served with lettuce, a lemon slice and tartar sauce. The homemade chips were good too.

The thing that sets DD's version of fried breasts apart is the way they prepare them. After you select the breasts you want from a seperate menu they're fried and then served while still on the girl, a very cool twist on a classic dish. The girl, I think her name was Ann was very friendly and easy to talk to (a must for this type of presentation) and quite knowledgeable about the place, and she politely answered all of my questions.

On a side note a part of the girl I had the pleasure of dining with ended up being used in another item that can only be found here. While I was enjoying my meal the girl suggested I try the "Pussy Rings". Sliced and fried up like onion rings, it's something I've never come across before. They taste amazing too, thanks in part to the special batter they use.

Overall I really enjoyed DD's. It felt like I had stepped back in time and the staff there were very nice. Thanks goes out to Nina my adorable waitress who snapped the pic of me enjoying my Fish'N'Tits meal. So if you're looking for a fun family atmosphere with great food and a cool 50's theme be sure to check out The Double D when you're in Visalia.
