CNW Mikado From Lost Film by PRR8157 CNW Mikado From Lost Film by PRR8157
In 1929, MGM made the film "Thunder".  It was the last silent film made starring Lon Chaney, and was a railroad themed drama.  It was filmed in Wisconsin on the Chicago and North Western Railway.  Production stills show that a class J 2-8-2 was featured in the film.  The engine in this clip appears to be a class J, with all the design features consistent.
The original film is lost, with only a few moments of surviving footage known.  This short clip could well be another fragment of "Thunder" as it has some elaborate arc lighting to back light the engine in this night shot.  Because of its dramatic nature, it could have been included in a stock footage library for use in other films.  If so, this is an unknown piece from that missing picture.

Update:  An MGM production still shows the light being affixed to the side of the engine.  media.gettyimages.com/photos/a…
Here is the known surviving footage:

A couple of fill in shots seen in this clip were filmed on railroads other than the C&NW; Santa Fe and Union Pacific it appears.
