An episode of the non-canon Doctor Who Series 3, "Daleks in Manhattan," featured Daleks in 1930's New York City. I heard David Tennant, who plays Doctor Who, mention in an interview that there would be "Art Deco Daleks" featured in the episode. Which of course got me thinking...what would an "Art Deco Dalek" look like??

Later on of course, we saw that Tennant's words were as bogus as the rest of the New Series, but I had been inspired none-the-less. :XD:

Then of course I designed/drew it. I'm more of a Victorian guy, and I wasn't too familiar with Art Deco designs (Art Deco being the prevalent design in the 1930's). So I got a bunch of books on Art Deco from the library and studied up. My first attempt at an Art Deco Dalek came out looking WAY too 1950's, and I wasn't happy with it. This version was inspired by the front of The Crusader, which is a train that used to operate for the Reading Railroad back in the 1930's.

Daleks are copyright of the Terry Nation Estate.

I've always loved the art deco style. If you like lego and sci fi, check out Vince Toulouse. He makes brick-built art deco spaceships.
