Typography: An inside look

by Lintu47

Typography is an old form of art, everybody heard about it. But what exactly is typography? Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible while taking various forms, such as animals, objects, faces, hands or more direct inspirational quotes.

The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, line spacing, adjusting the spaces between groups of letters and adjusting the space between pairs of letters.

Typography uses type design, arranging type, and glyphs in the creation process. Those that use typography in their work are typesetters, typographers, graphic designers comic book designers, and graphic artist. Those are just a few of the fields that use typography in their work.

This form of art traces its origins to the first punches and dies used to make seals and currency in ancient times. The typographical principle, that is the creation of a complete text by reusing identical characters, was first realized in the Phaistos Disc, a print item from Greece.

Some of the typography artworks carry a strong message while forming visually pleasing artworks and some of the other works quote inspiring truths in a more direct manner. The concept behind any typography artwork that we see here on deviantART or any other place is the artist's way to reach out to the viewers.

Typography is also one of the cornerstones of good graphic design. Selecting and manipulating typefaces is an art unto itself, therefore it’s no surprise that classic typography regularly makes its way into famous paintings and sculptures.

In this feature article we've barely scratched the surface and revealed just a bit of what typography is and how beautiful it can be when visionary people handle it. I hope it made you curious enough to find out more about the art of type, and I would love you to show your appreciation towards typography works and their artists.
