SMASH: Medusa

What!? As if people haven't played the new Kid Icarus yet!? Well I only got it last week so I try to be sensitive about these things.
OH ALSO I'd probably better get this Smash thing finished. Some early images will be shown at E3 this year and all of my drawings are already well over a year old.
So Kid Icarus: Uprising pleased and disappointed me in equal measure (sure it's so mainstream to criticise the controls but my god) and to my surprise Medusa WASN'T the final boss, in fact she was pretty much retired after Chapter 9. So, if the new Smash has a second Kid Icarus character (and I expect it will) then it could be a whole host of people: Hades, Palutena or even - god forbid - Viridia or Pyrrhon. Still, my Smash roster is generally limited to "Classics": characters who represent their franchised by dint of being there from the start or very prevalent so I still think Medusa deserves a place.

Stone Stare: Maybe it's because I'm awesome at the game (I'm not) but I never got turned to stone by Medusa. Does she do it in the game? Either way, in mythology that's her John Hancock so it's also her main special here. Just like Mewtwo's Disable really, short range, requires facing an opponent and incapacitates them for a short time.
Kiss of Death: This one's ripped straight from the game. Medusa will blow out a little red polyp which will hang in the air for a while, damaging anybody who makes contact with it. This was originally going to be a snake hair bite but I rather like the idea of the snakes being a part of her standard arsenal, maybe her smash attacks.
Viper Strike: I felt I had too many tether recoveries so rather than a snake assisted ascent I took her teleportation ability but gave it more of a form, wherein Medusa shoots upwards in a snake shaped bolt of black magic.
Cursed Palm: From a totally gross mouth on her hand, she spews a cloud of poison gas. Not dissimilar to the Ice Climbers Blizzard, I think it would make sense for Medusa to be a generally poison themed character.
Serpent Storm: This one was just made up, I didn't want to be too contrived. Adopting her more monstorous form, the snakes in Medusa's hair shoot out to a great length and flail around wildly for a while OR (now that I think of it) they shoot out directly at the current opponents in play. This would probably require them to have a limited range.

I usually have a knee-jerk reaction to the mere suggestion of another Kid Icarus character but then I remembered this was made back before Smash 4 when Kid Icarus wasn't overrepped. :p

So yeah, a second KI character was certainly welcome after Uprising, and Medusa is certainly an important part of the franchise even if her role in Uprising was pretty diminished in comparison and would be pretty different from the other villains in the roster, who are mostly all big hulking brutes. I kinda feel iffy about her though personally, since she's a Greek mythology character and not really a Nintendo creation. I mean, yeah, it's Nintendo's take on her, so it's not like she's the actual Medusa of Greek mythology, but it still seems a bit weird to me. Probably why I thought Palutena was more preferable to her, even if I don't care for Palutena as a character (and in Smash they really botched her moveset, especially her specials). But I wouldn't be angry or upset if Medusa got in. Well... I wouldn't had it been back in Smash 4 as the KI newcomer. Certainly not now that a niche three-game series has three characters (thanks Sakurai).

Turning to people to stone is Medusa's entire shtick so Stone Stare is a must. I think you could differentiate from being frozen in some ways, like being able to attack them while in stone for extra damage (frozen characters only take half-damage). Don't really have much to say about Kiss of Death since it just seems like an ordinary projectile to me, unless it remains stationary which would would be pretty unique. Viper Strike looks cool, but rather than straight up I think it'd be cool if you could control it a bit more, that way it really feels like an arcing bolt of electricity.  Cursed Palm is neat in that you implemented one of the weapons from Uprising (something they easily could have done with Dark Pit but didn't) in a way that suits the character. Now if this move actually had a poisoning effect that would last for a few seconds after coming in contact with it then this move would be super-unique since there isn't a poisoning status effect in Smash yet (White Pikmin actually use the darkness effect that Ganondorf uses in Smash; it doesn't actually linger). Not sure how useful Serpent Storm would be since the range seems to be pretty limited though I must admit the drawing you did for it makes it look very intimidating. I feel like the obvious choice her Final Smash though would be for her to become the big floating gorgon head and fly around freely while having access to a couple of attacks.

Overall, while I do feel odd about a public domain character being playable in Smash (even if it is Nintendo's take on it), I think Medusa would have been a cool and interesting addition to the roster, certainly more than Palutena whose potential was wasted. But I'd rather wait til KI gets another game, because four characters for a series that small would really annoy me. Dark Pit already soured my opinion of Kid Icarus in Smash 4.

Yes. I was of that exact same mind too; using the Medusa name instead of a gorgon known by another moniker does seem hard to consider a "Nintendo character" but I don't suppose there's much that can be done about it now and I guess the legendary figure is at least public domain!

There are plenty of other games though that incorporate Medusa - perhaps the fact that Nintendo character are usually so iconic and original sh seems a bit out of place that way.

And I too was somewhat disappointed with Palutnea's specials - shoehorned abilities from Uprising but also pretty bog standard projectile fare - I'm sure there were more interesting ones they could have used.

She doesn't turn anyone to stone in the game, but she does in her backstory (and the anime short showing it), and there's an item in the game shaped like her head that turns enemies to stone, so there is precedent for it. Also, great job!

Ah, I've yet to see the cartoons, but I am now familiar with the head item. Pretty useful in the multiplayer!

I think Medusa, Hades, Palutena, Magnus and even Pittoo have about an even chance of making it. I would like to see Medusa as well just because she's been a primary antagonist in all three games but I also love me some Hades so I could go either way.

I really like incorporating the Cursed Palm into the moveset. Well done.

Pittoo is just Pit with different colours though. Technically he was already in Brawl. Unless they try to give him a different moveset which I think would be a dreadful waste of a spot.
Magnus I think is very likely despite being yet another sword user, but I think you've touched on the best candidates. But Medusa wasn't in the Game Boy game was she?

And thanks! I tried to make the attack names appropriate so I ended up using weapon names where possible.

Well, that's why I think Pittoo has a chance. They created all these new weapons, it's entirely possible to give him a completely unique moveset. I don't want him either, I'd rather it be a character that looks unique but I think it's a possibility and could be done well. Also, no, Medusa wasn't in Of Myths and Monsters, I'm just a moron and didn't do my homework.

I think you did a fine job so A+ work.
