Description
The piece of art that has taken up most of my free time since March 1st, 2020 (finished April 28th, 2020). A reconstruction of the iconic hadrosaur Parasaurolophus wading in a riverbed in Late Cretaceous (77-76 mya) Alberta, the environment preserved as the Dinosaur Park Formation. This is a fairly well-known habitat consisting of well-watered swamps and dense forests of conifers & ginkgoes and undergrowth including both gymnosperms and angiosperms. Among the plants I've depicted include the large beech tree to the left, various conifer trees & ginkgoes, a ton of ferns, some palms, the large-leafed Gunnera on the far right, and more.
The characteristic tube-crest of Parasaurolophus walkeri is shown here with a moderate keratin covering, entirely speculative and loosely based on/inspired by rumors and the occasional photo I've seen of fossil skulls.
If you're interested in learning more about the flora of the Dinosaur Park Formation and by extension Late Cretaceous, Campanian Canada, I would highly recommend checking out Maija Karala's excellent blog on the subject: hummingdinosaur.wordpress.com/…
My main inspiration as far as composition, color scheme etc is this beautiful image of a pair of elephants bathing in Thailand:

Hi, would it be okay to use your illustration for a graphic design project I'm working on? It's strictly for my portfolio to show page layout. I'm adapting the Wikipedia page on Parasaurolophus into a "Dungeons and Dragons" style book. Full credit and links would be provided. If you'd rather I didn't, I completely understand. Thank you. ~Jason
