Seniority Announcement: July 2020

Seniority Announcement: July 2020

Seniority has been a cornerstone of DeviantArt since the site's early years, and is a community award given to deviants who have made their mark on the community. These outstanding deviants have been recognized for their level of interaction, helpfulness with others, kindness, sincerity, and many other traits. These deviants can be recognized by the medal icon that appears next to their username, and in almost 20 years, less than 2,000 deviants have received Seniority. The following five deviants, having shown a kindred spirit that has led to continued positive community interaction and involvement, are the most recent recipients of Seniority. Please join us in congratulating them! @jesonite @jesonite is a long-time deviant who has one of the most instantly recognizable galleries on DeviantArt. He's been a constant presence in the anthro community over the years, and carries a positive attitude with him wherever he goes. @SelflessDevotions A very active and recognizable deviant

Celebrating Deviousness - July 2020

Celebrating Deviousness - July 2020

In Recognition of Exemplary Membership and an Outstanding Spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community INTRODUCING LAWRENCECORNELLPHOTO I am Lawrence Cornell and I live near London. I am not a city boy however and spend as much time as I can outdoors. My photography is mainly landscapes and nature, the more remote and wild the better. I love stormy weather, not sunny blue sky days. The wilder the weather the better.  I am at my happiest in the mountains of the Scottish Highlands or on the Isle Of Skye. I have itchy feet and I love to travel. When I go to be in nature I want to be away from people and I want to be spellbound. That is easy for me as I find nature incredible. The world is a beautiful place and I search for this beauty every time I pick up my camera. When I take a picture I want to capture not only the beauty of what lies before me but also the feeling I had when I was pressing the shutter.  When you look at one of my landscapes I want you to

Status Update Backgrounds, Profile Cover Updates

Status Update Backgrounds Add some extra flare and personality to your status updates! You can now customize your status updates by adding a gradient, pattern, or custom background image — just like the Custom sections on your Profile. Once you’ve added a background image, you can add an overlay color and adjust the display mode; cover, contain, or tile. Try uploading a smaller image and set the display to “tile” to create your own custom patterns! Drag to Reposition Your Profile Cover Image You can now drag to reposition your cover image so that you have a more accurate display of your artwork on your Profile. With this change, we've also cut down the height of the cover images on Profiles. We look forward to sharing additional updates soon! Please continue sharing your feedback and what you’d like to see added to DeviantArt!

Being LGBTQ+ Around the World

Being LGBTQ+ Around the World

There are many overlapping experiences among LGBTQ+ individuals around the world, but one of the important things to be mindful of is that experiences are shaped by the community, culture, and location they happen in. These factors, alongside many others, can create very distinct experiences that guide how LGBTQ+ communities are formed and are perceived in their respective places. Some examples of this are the baklâ of the Philippines, the māhū of the Polynesian Islands, and the two-spirit people of the First Nations and Native American people of Northern America. These cultures have historically had broader concepts of what gender is and how it functions with regard to social roles than some modern cultures. Cultures like these may have been impacted throughout the centuries by colonization, wars, and other environmental, social, or economic factors that have changed how being LGBTQ+ is perceived, but in many cultures these identities have survived or are being talked about in

Weekly Artist Feature: Venishi

Each week, we interview a different artist and share their art and featured answers on our official Facebook page. This week's featured artist is @Venishi! When did you start making art? Did you have any training for it? I’ve always loved drawing, but I didn’t know about careers in concept art until late in high school. I decided to get an illustration degree with the hopes of working on games. Since graduating in 2012, I’ve worked mostly as a concept artist or illustrator on video games, but have also found myself designing in many other areas. Skills that I’ve cultivated in graphic design, animation, texturing, 3D modeling, and even particle effects have all played a role in finding or keeping employment as an artist. What sort of themes do you like to portray in your art? In my personal work, I like to explore the intersection of disturbing, mysterious, and beautiful. I’m still searching for an outlet to create this type of art full-time, but I also enjoy having something that’s

LGBTQ+ Artists on DeviantArt

LGBTQ+ Artists on DeviantArt

There is no understating the importance of a global community. While there will always be a wealth of different experiences guided by personal backgrounds, regional customs, and many other meaningful factors, the benefit to a community that spans the world is that people with common experiences can come together and show one another support even from thousands of miles away. DeviantArt is a place LGBTQ+ artists from around the world call home. Art is an important means of expression, especially so when covering identity, and is one of many ways that members of the LGBTQ+ community connect with and show support for one another. We reached out to LGBTQ+ deviants for their thoughts on what Pride means to them, and how art as a means of identity expression is important to them. They shared their thoughts with us and had the following to say: “Up until recently I've always been scared of being part of the LGBTQ+ community. I realized within myself that I was a lesbian at around the

Weekly Artist Feature: Narga-Lifestream

Each week, we interview a different artist and share their art and featured answers on our official Facebook page. This week's featured artist is @Narga-Lifestream! When did you start getting into costuming and cosplay? Did you have any training for it? I started creating cosplay when I was 15 in 2008. I didn't know how to make props or sew back then, but I studied art in school so I had some drawing skills—they didn't help me at the beginning, I learned how to do a proper paint job for armor years later. I keep learning, even now, with every costume I make; there's still a lot of things I need to learn. What is one misconception you think people have about costuming? The most popular opinion about cosplayers from non-cosplayers is that everything we make is useless or can be used only for RP games in the bedroom, but that’s not true. Cosplayers can make cosplay their business and do it for a living. Even if you don't want to make cosplay your job, it's still an amazing hobby. I

Eclipse and Secret Santa

Eclipse and Secret Santa

I would like to take a moment regarding operating a group and hosting an public exchange event on deviantART. As you are aware of this by now, the Classic deviantART will be retired on Wednesday and Eclipse (dA version v9) will be the only option available. The Summer Secret Santa 2020 event held at the Secret Santa Network, will be the last that will use HTML capabilities. Starting in the next event, the Secret Santa 2020 event, HTML will no longer be used and the new Journal/Literature editor will be used to edit entries. The entries will be drafted and saved in the Sta.sh and edited. If you would want to edit entries and don't want to post it in your journal or as a literature, I have provided instructions on how to do it: 1. Located on the upper right corner of your screen/web browser, there is the SUBMIT section next to your avatar. Below SUBMIT, select JOURNAL. 2. Enter the text of the title of your journal and the main text below the title of your journal. When you're all
I'm really happy to announce that the Summer Secret Santa 2020 event is half way over!
Later today and possibly tomorrow, I will be moving forward to having to send out reminder notes to participants in the Humanoid: Advanced and Mixed: Intermediate categories. If you haven't gotten a reminder about this, please be patient as we're d
