From season ruin to redemption, the Virginia Cavaliers have won their first NCAA Division I Men's Basketball championship in franchise history!
Last year, the Virginal Cavaliers was eliminated by the #16 UMBC Retrivers in the South Regional first round, 74 to 54.
But after a historic loss to a #16 seeded team last year, the South Regional #1 Cavaliers have won it all after they eliminated the West Regional #3 Texas Tech Red Raiders by a score of 85 to 77 in overtime. The Cavaliers finish their school season with a 35-3 record (16-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference). The Red Raiders with their elimination loss will finish their school year at 31-7 (14-4 in the Big 12 Conference).
The National Championship game also had its first overtime game since 2008 when the Kansas Jayhawks (36-3) defeated the Memphis Tigers (38-1) in overtime, 75 to 68.
The tournament was the first since 1979 to see two finalists playing for the national championship game. This was also the first time since 2006 when a school has became a first time national champion. In 1979, the Michigan State Spartans won their first national title in their second Final Four appearance over the Indiana State Sycamores. Also in 2006, the Florida Gators won their first title in their 2nd title game appearance in their 3rd Final Four.
So how did the last two remaining teams appear in the national championship game?
On Saturday, in the first national semifinal game, the #1 Cavaliers eliminated the Midwest Regional #5 seed Auburn Tigers, 63 to 62. The Tigers with their elimination loss finished at 30-10 (11-7 in the Southeastern Conference).
And in the second national semifinal game, the #3 Red Raiders eliminated the East Regional #2 Michigan State Spartans, 61 to 51. The Spartans with their elimination loss finish their school season at 30-7 (16-4 in the Big Ten Conference)
#5 Guard Kyle Guy was named the 2019 Final Four Most Outstanding Player! Playing for 45 minutes, he scored a total of 24 points, 8 of 15 field goals, 4 of 9 three-pointers, 4 free throws, 3 rebounds, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 3 personal fouls.
The 2019 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four was held at the U.S. Bnak Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The attendance record for the two national semifinal games was 72,711 and the attendance record for the national championship game was 72,062.
