Throughout history, the blind have gotten a bad rep. They've been treated as second-class citizens, considered cripples, called worthless to society, and generally looked down upon by everyone from every walk of society. There have been a few exceptional people whose lack of eyesight did not impact their ability to shine, however. Ray Charles is perhaps one of the most famous of these.
In comic books, several prominent (and not-so-prominent) characters are blind. Daredevil is perhaps the most obvious example. Stick is not so obvious yet he is a mainstream character; he trained Daredevil and Elektra, forced Wolverine to retreat from his feral state into a more human state of mind, and fought against the Hand for years. There is also Blindfold, a blind character whose clairvoyance is almost deific.
However, I have been searching Google; Elfwood; and even Deviant Art for the last few hours. I have yet to come up with a single piece of art displaying a blind girl that looks just as bad-ass as a superheroine without actually being one. My recent trio of pieces, "I Ain't No Goddamn Cripple" as a series name, displayed a wallpaper I recently downloaded modified with text. The girl in the wallpaper looks amazing, truly bad-ass for a character that isn't wearing a comic-esque costume.
Is that it? Are blind people suddenly not cool anymore? I realize portraying people in a realistic fashion is an accepted form of art, and I appreciate the art. But look at those pics: the dark background, the dark hair and attire, the collar and piercings - clearly what mainstream society calls an "alternative" style. Some people would call it almost goth or emo. Among all the pics out there, I have yet to find a single pic that follows the same style and theme of this particular wallpaper from which I have derived some basic textual art.
While I can certainly appreciate the fact that this means the individual who created the wallpaper had a unique idea for his or her art, it also means that there is clearly no popular market for this particular style of blind art. I am particularly fond of the blindfold, which makes a number of different statements depending upon one's interpretation of the image. I love the image, and I would love to find more like it but none seem to exist.
It's kind of a shame, really. I personally think the girl looks bad-ass. Too bad she's a loner. Do any fellow deviants out there know where art similar to this might be found? I'd much appreciate any links you could give me.
