Fireflies by postapocalypsia Fireflies by postapocalypsia
This was just lurking in my head for a while so I started working it up - first as a drawing, then as a photoshop colour-in and then a painting (acrylic) 640mm x 920mm.
I didn't know whether to call it "Fireflies" or "Clare de Lune" - any suggestions welcome!

Glad you like it:)
I just had a read of your Watchmen commentary and found it very enlightening. I was a superhero geek as a child and I guess the fascination stuck with me, albeit quietly, into adulthood, so I always went along to see whatever cinematic offerings came along...Well, none of them ever seemed to transcend that gulf of unbelievability or credibility and so remained (to me) as lightweight fantasy, and a guilty indulgence.
But Watchmen has changed all that and is a watershed on many levels - your comments ring true, it's a milestone which has set an almost unattainable benchmark for any who follow.

I agree - though I hear that interest is dropping off, and there's a rise in the number of negative reviews. I always wonder what it is that people expect, and in what context they chose to judge. It's a strange world!

Actually, for me the only film before Watchmen that ever lived up to how I really saw the fiction world was Conan the Barbarian. Arnie looked like Buscema's Conan, the accents were mostly thick european, the soundtrack was amazing, and the fights felt painful. A spaghetti western with swords!

Take care man.

Liam.

...the character I most wanted to be retold (well) was the Phantom, minus the purple jump suit and huge holes in the plot. My version would be virtually naked like Tarzan but with the purple and mask replaced by ornate tattoos, balls by Rorschach and scowl by Wolverine - a lethal shadow. Wouldn't it make for a topical story now with all of the environmental and social displacement issues coming to the fore? I guess I should concept up my version to show what I mean...

This is a gorgeous piece. The under-lighting, her expression and pose, the amazing carving on the stone... it all adds up to a spectacular and ethereal work. Beautiful.

Oh, and as for the title, I probably would have called it something else entirely, so I don't have a say. ;)

Great painting and composition. I did something similar, just for myself, long ago, inspired by the end of Labyrinth, I think, but I like yours better. Yes, it was the "take off logic like shoes and leave at the door" aspect of the floating stones that drew me to that element. The under-lighting is wonderful! I like the hands, feet, expression, and patterns. Well done!

Both titles are excellent - but I think I prefer "Fireflies" because of the starry effect and their ephemeral nature. Something about the "flying" part of it, too - it is such a contrast with the floating stone and adds lightness.

I love how the clouds swirl around and highlight. Clouds are my favorite accents.

All in all, very dreamlike. What is the meaning of the stone, if anything?

The stones don't have a specific meaning, but I just thought it helped to have them there as some kind of contrast. I like the idea that the stones are a contrast in form to the clouds, in the same way that the warm light from the flies contrasts the cool light of the moon - and I like the idea that they are floating. To me that says "abandon all logic from here on in". I did the circles and lines on the stone almost as an afterthought - I had already painted the big stone, and thought it would be nice to add a mysterious touch to the surface to evoke some kind of historical or mythical narrative. Hopefully it is all a bit ambiguous so that the viewer can make up their own story!

Glad you like it!:)
