Rock Star by popinat Rock Star by popinat
This is an illustration I did for a contest organized in my town. Many students of my art school participated, like last year. This time I decided to go digital because I wasn't satisfied with my last year's entry. The contest has to do with the fancine week, that just started and they're playing movies of all genres, today we saw the movie EX MACHINA and I loved it.

I think I'm really going for this style, I like it. Also, I pushed myself to play with color palettes and add shading.

Also, after checking out Ex Machina, what was it in particular that captivated you, and what themes did you see throughout the film?

HAHa thanks!!!
oh wow, I realy liked it because it was very well written, the way the film makes you feel like in the skin of the protagonist, the way they make you empathize with Ava, like he did. They portrait her as almost human, we believed her, we believed she had feelings and that they would have a happy ending. But this film made us think. If in the end Caleb and Ava escaped together, it would have been the type of ending where you say aww so cute and then you forget. But they made it incredibly well because they make you think, and realize that in fact, a machine will never be a human, they won't have feelings, and they do not have sense of moral or justice. Ava was programmed to survive, to escape under any circumstances, and that's what she did. In fact, the experiment was a success.
The boss, Nathan, is actually not so bad. Yeah, he used his androids as sexual toys after he made them, he actually saw them as what they were, artificial machines. He knew everything that Ava was going to do, he was aware of what was causing the power cuts, he knew that Ava was going to seduce Caleb to escape and he even gave her the ways to do that. Like when he broke the drawing she made, he knew that Caleb was going to see Ava as a victim and that he would feel the instinct to protect her. So yeah, he was really smart, and had all planned. What he didn't have planned was that he would die at the end but oh well...he deserved it. So yeah, the ending was surprising, because we were fooled, like Caleb. Ava never had feelings, she wasn't a human, and that's a really nice piece of realism in a sci-fi film.

It reminded me of the film HER, do you know it?

Oh man*o*. No wonder people enjoy this movie so much. And ya, despite it not being the most happiest of endings of the guy saving the girl because he thinks she's a slave, at least it's a more realistic portrayal to show us that no matter how we portray robots trying to develop feelings, that will never happen.

And oh ya I remember that film, though I'm not sure I'll be watching again anytime soon. It was definitely a tearjerker.
