Design Origins:
Like many second-stage bug pokemon from early on in the game, Cascoon is based off the chrysalis or cocoon stage of a butterfly or moth. Just like Metapod, Kakuna, and Silcoon.
Name Origins:
-Cascoon may be a combination of "cask" [an often cylindrical container], and "cocoon". It may also derive from "cast", the shell meant for immobilizing the body or the method of creating said shell.
-Mayuld is a combination of "mayu" [cocoon], and shield.
-Blindalys is a combination of "blindage" [armoring] and "chrysalis".
-Panekon is a combination of "Panzer" [armor] and "Kokon" [cocoon]
-Dunjiajian can be literally translated to "shielded cocoon".

Cascoon makes it's protective cocoon by wrapping its entire body with a fine silk from its mouth. Once enshrouded, the silk hardens and the pokemon prepares for it's eventual evolution. While it remains motionless if attacked, it doesn't forget the pain it endured. It does not move because it will be weak upon evolution if it does. The inside of the cocoon is hot, and when cracks appear on the shell, it's a sure sign it will evolve soon. When it does evolve, it will seek payback on those that attacked it.

Cascoon’s Most Powerful Physical Attack:
BUG BITE [Learned from it's prior evolution Wurmple, or from a Tutor.]
Please don't make your Cascoon a fighter. It's just not meant for it. This move is really just... average. It's a bug type move, with a base power of 60, making it only slightly better than a Tackle. If it's foe is holding onto a berry, it'll steal and eat the berry... but this move should really be used for Cute Contests.
Cascoon's Most Powerful Special Attack:
ELECTROWEB [Learned from a Tutor]
This electric move is just... so-so. Normally learned by Joltik and Galvantula, this move can be learned from a tutor. It's got a base power of 55 and can lower the Speed of your opponent. It hits all enemies, but really use this one in Beauty contests.


Trivia:
-Cascoon, Silcoon, Metapod, and Kakuna are all called Cocoon Pokemon. They also share the same base stat total, learnset, Ability, and EV yield... this unfortunately ties them all for the lowest base stat total of evolved pokemon.
-Cascoon and Silcoon are almost entirely identical in not just design, but type, moveset, base stats, and body style. BUT, unlike all other "cocoon" pokemon, it's base defense does not lower when it evolves!
-Cascoon, despite being a pure Bug type pokemon, can be found in a Friend Safari that is not it's own type. It can be found in the Poison-Type Friend Safari, probably because it evolves into the partial Poison-type Dustox.
Artist Notes:
Cascoon is a pokemon that is a really simple design. A silky ball. This makes it not only cute -- in its own way -- but hard to design a pony for. I was always more fond of Silcoon and thus, Beautifly, but I can appreciate Dustox. I don't usually enjoy training worm/cocoon/butterfly pokemon after I've gone through a new game once before, so while I have trained both Silcoon AND Cascoon, I haven't in a long time. This earth pony's cutie mark is a threaded needle, since it's covered in silk.
