3-Dimensional...the category
So the 3D category lives under digital art's main category on Deviant Art, but it also lives under Fan-art's main category as well. There are two tiers of 3 Dimensional art (as opposed to 3D Game art which is similar but different restrictions) and better understanding where your work belongs under will help keep your submissions clean and organized
Ultimately the biggest difference between Digital Art - 3D and Fan art - 3D is the differences between those two categories...Digital art is for original copyrighted by you or non copyrighted work, and Fan-art is for work that you designed based off copyright material. Even non copyright material..ie: someone's written up OC and you draw it to belief can also be classified as "Fan-art" as you are taking someone else's idea and showing your version of it.
Unlike the 3D Game art category on Deviant art, Digital art - 3D and Fan art - 3D don't really follow many restrictions at all..outside the categories restrictions and Deviant Art general rules that is. They are limited to "game ready" or anything like that, they are simply 3D work or fan-art 3D work.

The break down of Digital art - 3D
Digital art - 3D has 5 sub categories: Abstract, Characters, objects, scenes and vehicles. These were simplified as much as possible to help avoid confusion with where your work should be placed. It's very straight forward now more then it used to be, that I'm able to explain what goes where with just a piece of work from those sub categories (and when you submit you see thumbnails similar to that as well )

There are sub tiers even further into those categories but I actually find them too expansive. For searching purposes given we can add key words to bring up those same sub categories it might be food for thought to try and eliminate some of the break downs and possibly look for a different break down system. Abstract and objects tend to get mixed up with submissions but it usually has to do with the composition being able to be categorized in both. Having the further break down for these category heads is a bit overwhelming even for myself when looking through the galleries to find more work to feature, might be an idea to think of.

The break down for Fan-art - 3D category
Fan-art - Digital art - 3D is broken down in smaller steps and those are Books & novels, Games, Other, TV & movies. 4 sub categories that can generally fit any form of 3D Fanart you can think of, and if not have an "other" folder for anything that doesn't fit in the other three.

Simple, clear and straight forward. Putting aside the miss categorized pieces of work in these folders it's a very clear break down.
Those are the two Digital 3D categories on Deviant Art besides game development 3d art which was previously explained in GDA project educate week as well as the contest linked above, "3-differences". Understanding the differences between the two 3D categories will help your submission processes go easier.
