Description
Pikmin 5 is a real-time strategy and puzzle game developed by Nintendo EPD and published by Nintendo, serving as a sequel to Pikmin 4. The game introduces an urban environment, departing from the series’ natural settings, and expands on open-world gameplay with a mix of exploration, resource management, and survival mechanics.
Players control Elan and Lina, two Hocotatian siblings stranded on PNF-404, as they explore a sprawling, interconnected city divided into six zones, including rooftops, subways, factories, parks, a shopping mall, and flooded residential areas. The urban setting offers new challenges, such as environmental hazards, puzzles, and dangerous enemies.
Pikmin 5 retains the original Pikmin types: Red, Blue, Yellow, White, Rock and Winged, with updated designs to fit the urban environment, and introduces three new types:
Rubber Pikmin: Bright orange, elastic, and resistant to falls and electricity.
Dust Pikmin: Pale grey, capable of slipping through cracks and disorienting enemies with dust clouds.
Glass Pikmin: Transparent and fragile, able to reflect light and blend into surroundings.
A key new objective is building a rocket to escape the planet. Players collect and customize parts from everyday urban objects, with each component affecting the rocket’s performance. Pikmin types play specific roles in construction, while players must defend against enemies attempting to sabotage their progress.
The game reintroduces a dynamic day-night cycle, where daylight offers safety, and night brings heightened risks with predatory creatures. Players can shelter indoors or embark on dangerous night expeditions for valuable rewards. The game culminates in a challenging escape mission, where the quality of the rocket determines the success of the launch, encouraging creativity and exploration throughout the journey.
