Details

What is...
  • Community engagement: Active community engagement may include views, favorites, comments, the deviant's engagement with other campaign submissions, and off-site activity linking back to DeviantArt. It is not a case of most faves wins.
  • Active voicein spreading awareness and encouraging charity engagement. This is how vocal the deviant is about the cause. It may be through descriptions, links to charity organisations, journal entries, or additional deviations outside of daily themes that promote awareness during the time-frame.
  • Consistent submission: All submissions must be relevant to the daily word and accompanied by an artist's statement containing a description of how it relates (it need only be a sentence long but must be present in order to be considered).

What if some of my entries aren't finished?
That is completely okay. Submissions do not have to be resolved or complicated, just consecutive (daily) and on-message to keep you in the running. What's most important about this event is not the work itself, but the message it contains and how far you can get it.

I can't connect to deviantArt, how do I make the day's submission?
If for some reason you can't get to deviantArt, you can make a public post elsewhere (E.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) for the day. The submission must be posted on deviantArt with a link to the public post before the time period closes.

I skipped a day, can I still enter?
Yes! It's very likely artists will skip days. You may have done the most that period.

Hopetober 2016 DeviantArt Challenge Wrap-Up

Despite over 8000 views and
encouraging combining Inktober or Drawlloween themes, deviantArt fell in line with trend over cause with reward and participation was minimal. Of course, it has only made me appreciate those who did participate and share their incredible stories, open their hearts, and make an effort to spread the word even more. You are superstars in my eyes and in my heart.

Please take a moment to check in on Moonbeam13 and thank her for so generously donating these prizes as community incentive.

See you in 2017! In the meantime, enjoy these entries from charitable deviants

2016-276 Acceptance and CourageRebecca pogopuggie is battling breast cancer. She posted a thirty-day challenge for October, a pink-ribbon challenge for Hopetober. I plan to use the series as writing prompts. Next month is Movember, so it is a fitting challenge for both sides of the house.
I am sitting on the porch watching and listening to the gully-washer rolling through, even getting some droplets blown in on me. It is a beautiful day.
Acceptance is like that. I can try to ignore the rain or pretend that it isn't there, but that will not change anything. The rain simply is. I can't make it not be. What I can do is decide what I am going to do with the fact that it is raining. I can sit and mope, I can do something inside, I can go for a walk or I can sit on the porch and enjoy it. But if the are upwind windows open, It would behoove me to go close them.

No matter how conflicted we may be, breasts are part of our female identity, which may be why, for most of us, having breast cancer is our biggest fear. We're more afraid of it than we are of heart disease, which is 10 times more likely to be what sends us to the great beyond.

My immediate impulse was to flag this comment as spam, but I did for some reason choose to check it out. Others won't be so trusting or receptive.

For your future reference, it's best to add a description to your links so people understand that your post is relevant and not just spam. Try using the href tags. Join our breast cancer patient card drive for example.

It's a lovely idea, but it's difficult to just give a card directly to a patient unless you're catching one on their way out, as hospitals aren't going to disclose which of their patients have breast cancer and it's against most hospital policies to visit rooms if not friends/family etc. (Also, some hospitals also don't specialize in cancer treatment and send those patients elsewhere - e.g. I go to a specialized cancer hospital across the road from the actual hospital).

Make sure to tell your participants to go through the proper channels and contact the hospital's volunteer coordinators/managers and be prepared for some to simply say no. It may be easier for your participants to donate blank cards at these hospitals for their family and friends to fill out.

There is a photo my mother and I took three years ago of our dog and her adopted son, a small kitten who was left abandoned. It's a beautiful photo and I want to use it for one of the prompts, but I don't know if I'm allowed to.

There is a cure for cancer. Many for different types. Women develop breast cancer, because of the crap that's in your deodorant.

There are currently no understood causes or cures for breast cancer. There is no harm in taking the precaution of switching to all-natural products but as the scientific community currently understands it will not reduce your risk.

Yeah. Some of my friends have beat it, some haven't.

I'll see I can use these for daily writing prompts.

The prompts are (almost obnoxiously) positive because it's such an emotionally loaded topic. I have no doubt that many submissions will be heart-felt. It would be wonderful to have literary community engaged in this. Thank you for taking the time.

I have a close friend who has now been cancer-free for almost fifteen years. But in the midst of it, simply holding on to hope and the will to fight was a constant challenge.

It's definitely a balancing act, it's difficult to stay both positive and realistic about the situation. I'm happy for your friend, once it hits 5 years without recurrence I'm told the risk goes back down to that of the general population, wonderful!
