Riku did not attend the rulings. He would not leave Sora, even for such an important meeting and in truth didn’t wish to be there if it meant watching Sephiroth be executed. Whatever else Sephiroth was he was Riku’s mentor: a teacher, a brother, a father—the force that had guided him in much of life and taught him so many things. Grief had consumed Sephiroth, leaving anger and hurt and suffering, but Sephiroth’s darkness was something he could understand. He had seen it himself.
He did not know if he could ever forgive him for sacrificing Sora. Even if the blow wasn’t fatal, his friend might never return to him. If Sora was truly gone, Riku knew he would hate Sephiroth for that. But...part of him just wanted to be through with all the hatred...it didn’t do any good. Hating Sephiroth wouldn’t make Sora recover and it would give Riku no satisfaction to witness whatever sentence was being carried out.
