It has come to my attention that many members of PoetryPlease are happy about being 'published' by a site called Poetry.com, which amongst other things claims to offer $10,000 in prizes and publish your work in an anthology.

THIS IS A SCAM.

The 'anthology' of poetry that you pay something like $50 for will be printed in tiny tiny fonts and crammed with thousands upon thousands of other 'semi-finalists' and 'finalists.'

listen, just for a few minutes. take a few deep breaths [even if you don't want to breathe anymore]. listen to the pitter-patter of your heart beating in your ears and feel your pulse racing. taste the silence of the world; see the anxiety take over you. close your eyes and look at the black. look at the black until you see something worth holding onto inside of yourself. wait until breathing doesn't feel like a losing game and then open your eyes, and listen. . look, you are wonderful. you remind me of a lullaby in winter, sung like a secret not meant for anyone to know; but it's a shame, because you're one of the most beautiful songs.

From what my letter said, I would have my own page. I had seen a preview of what it would look like, too. Are you sure? I don't want to reply to the letter if it's a fake.

It's definately fake. There will be a book published, but your page will only be on it if you purchase the book, and there are other cost that will creep up. On top of that, poetry.com has no credibility, so even though it might be cool to see your poem in print, in the long run, it has no effect on your writing career or portfolio.

"There's a sucker born every minute... and you were right on time."

I honestly don't understand how poetry.com keeps getting away with this same scam!
I fell for an identical scam on that site about 7 years ago.
More than that, although it may not be explicitly stated in the guidelines, poetry.com reserves the right to re-publish any poetry submitted through it in this contest. It's not just that you lose out once, the rip continues... wait till you see your poetry being submitted on other sites by poetry.com.
DO NOT submit poetry there; they are not fair to either their readers or the writers by continuing scams which infringe copyright of work.

Most of those sites are scams, unfortunately.

Searching for "poetry scams" on google will usually lead you to some links that talk about the situation more in detail, and, among other thiings, will have an encompassing list of the sites that are scams. Such lists will also usually talk about the few "contest" sites that actually are legitimate, and usually, the prizes they do offer are not spectacular. The offer of fantastic prizes is part of the scam; real sites can and will not offer huge cash prizes.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess poetry.com's only saving grace is the public's reaction to it. Some people wanting to mess around with them wrote some pretty funny stuff :giggle:

Hey, thanks for linking. I really hope as many poets can learn about this as possible. Some of the stories about people whose hopes were dashed are truly heartrending.

On the plus side if you don't order the book you can just have fun being published once in a while for no good reason free of charge.

Submit it to deviantart.com and let =PoetryPlease and ~PoetryPleaseWorkshop critique it. We'll always give you the credit you deserve.

This particular scam has been going for years!!!!!!!! Basically if they ask you for money, then they don't think that you are some kind of artistic genius!

Yes, but since it's still going, it's obviously working. And people are still falling into its trap.
