My Bio

Philemon Mukarno | Sculpting the Shadowbody

Performance Artist | Living Sculpture | Avant-Garde Composer

Welcome to the gallery of the Shadowbody.

I am Philemon Mukarno, a Dutch-Indonesian performance artist and composer based in Rotterdam. My work is not a performance in the traditional sense; it is a ritual. It is an act of stripping away the artificial layers of modern life to reveal the raw, trembling truth of the human form.

The Philosophy: Sacred Architecture
On DeviantArt, we often look for the surreal, the beautiful, and the strange. My art lives where those three intersect. I view the naked body not as an object of desire, but as "Sacred Architecture."

Like a temple weathered by time or a stone standing alone in a field, the body carries a history. In my work—whether through live performance or experimental film—I explore the concept of the Shadowbody. This is the side of ourselves we hide: the vulnerability, the darkness, the primal instinct, and the silence. My goal is to transform this vulnerability into a weapon of spiritual strength.

The Medium: Flesh, Sound, and Void
My background is in the rigorous world of classical composition and electronic music (graduating Cum Laude from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague). However, I found that sound alone was not enough. I needed to bleed into the visual.

My performances often fuse:

  • The Body: Unadorned, exposed, and pushed to physical limits, influenced by the slow, agonizing beauty of Butoh.

  • The Sound: Industrial electronic noise clashing with the ancient, meditative pulses of Indonesian Gamelan.

  • The Landscape: Placing the fragile human form against vast, indifferent nature—from the cold stones of Ireland to the industrial concrete of Rotterdam.

Why I Create
We live in a world of filters, algorithms, and polished lies. My art is a rebellion against that. It is "uncompromising"—a word critics often use to describe my style. I do not create to comfort; I create to confront.

When you look at my deviations, my films (like Move and Chair), or my photography, you are seeing a search for identity. You are seeing a man bridging the gap between his Asian roots and his European reality, trying to find where the spirit lives within the flesh.

Join the Ritual
I invite you to explore my gallery with an open mind. Look past the nudity and see the structure. Look past the silence and hear the scream.

  • Watch for updates on my latest experimental films.

  • Comment and share your interpretation of the Shadowbody.

  • Connect with the raw, imperfect beauty of the moment.
