"Come on! I'll show you around."

Updated 23/09/2017

-Posted a high resolution image with more details

Gave up after so much detailing... (This one is only half the size of the working image). I'm not seeing an end to this. So I've decided to call it done. Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions for this one!

Two things I find weird with the overall composition: (1) Twilight's extended arm (2) The high contrast of the pool at the bottom center of the image

An exploration of a possible city plan for Canterlot

Posting because I'd like to hear your thoughs on how the city might work (at least visually).

I'll keep working on this and update when I have more ideas. Currently it kind of looks more like a small vacation resort or an amusement park...

That explains it, I always thought that the capital of Equestria looked tiny... Before this, that is.

This has got such great Minas Tirith vibes that I'm actually humming the Gondor motif from Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings trilogy...!

This took an amazing amount of vision. I've always struggled to imagine how Canterlot was actually laid out as a city, but this makes sense and is really beautiful.

There's more detail and layout here than there was in the actual movie, much less the show!  Fantastic!

Oh wow! That is just... wow! I love the detail and the whole concept. It really draws on Canterlot's mythic links to the Minas Tirath in LotR and yet still remains true to the MLP-G4 aesthetic.

It's a good thing that exists a piece of art that show an aerial view of the capital of Equestria.
Thank you for making this piece of art!

I love it. Looking at it like this, it seems almost like an inverse Minas Tirith. In both cases, the citadel is the most protected from a land attack because it's the hardest to get to, but if you were to end up trapped in the citadel you'd be doomed because there's no escape either. Now it makes sense why you would use airships to attack...

I wish that expansion of the looks of Canterlot would have its depiction for a possible sequel to the 2017 movie, as long as the towers of the castle would share the same color palette as the show's counterpart.

This is absolutely beautiful. Been a fan of castles on mountains, like The Kingdom of Olympus in greek myth. The attention to detail is very good. To be fair, the world of equestria is inspired by the world of Middle-Earth. Man, J.R.R Tolkien left a huge mark on the world of imagination. God bless him for that.

This.

This. Is so. Amazing!

I've been looking for something like this on google, an expanded Canterlot City from top view.
I would have been happy with just something, anything at this point, and then I stumble across THIS.

I've actually had to LOOK AROUND. I counted the town squares, zoomed in on every detail, and now I think I'm in love with this picture.

The style is perfect for a scene like this and one really sees the work that went into it.
I can't tell you enough just how great this picture is. I think I'll have it printed :D

Sorry, I did not do a PNG beacuse I was afraid it would result in a huge file (the PSD file is 760Mb)

FYI, PNG with same resolution as JPEG you posted will be 20-80 MB max. And I'm sure DeviantArt would compress it into jpeg for the preview.

Thanks for the info!

Though if I may, can I ask why you would need a PNG file? Is it because it's generated from a lossless compression method? I always thought they were useful only when you want to preserve transparency...

Yes, you're right. It's because JPEG compression doesn't look great on hi-res displays. Just look at this for example: derpibooru.org/1406980
It doesn't look clear as Telegram background, for example. IMHO, any vector-like graphics should be compressed in PNG at first. (And Deviant will recompress them into jpeg for preview.)
Jpeg tend to loss some details.
Your art is great, I just want to make it greater :)

This is really awesome and I would definitely like to see specific areas of the town done in vignettes or small landscapes of urban settings. The houses at the top most part of the mountain near the airships and the river interest me the most. I'd imagine these were the ultra-rich ponies. It would be cool to see what their houses look like!

Yeah, I would also like to see more cityscapes down from the streets. I think after the movie people may post more Canterlot landscape based on the movie.

Yeah I took a look at the art book for the movie and they did some cool stuff for Canterlot but most of it was just open marketplace tents and stalls and the area where a stage was set up behind the castle. They didn't get down into the street levels and show permanent store fronts or residences. Definitely lots of room for creativity there still.

you should do close ups of the different parts of the city to show off detail.
this is an excellent view of Canterlot from the south
you should do a view from the lower North side of Canterlot.
