Edit 12/16: I will be announcing the winners later today on Tumblr, Deviantart, and WordPress.
This year I didn’t get my energy in a row in time to do another Halloween costume contest for my shy little borrower Oscar. However! In late November there comes a time when lots of humans are inexplicably more preoccupied with food (and lots of it). Oscar doesn’t know where this “Thanksgiving” holiday comes from, but he can definitely attest that a Food Day is a Good Day.
What I’d like to see from entries is your take on Thanksgiving for the little guy. It can be art or writing, as long as it includes some indication that Thanksgiving is involved. This contest isn’t going to run for very long and is meant to be more relaxed, so submissions need not be super fancy. Don’t do an extravagant painting or a novella for it (unless you want to, I guess!).
The deadline is December 8 at 11pm Central Standard Time.
- Must include Oscar having some Thanksgiving fun. What kinds of food would he be most drawn to? That’s up to you to imagine.
- Other characters are allowed, but the submission won’t be judged based on any other characters
- Keep it clean and respectful; Thanksgiving does not mean the same thing to everyone, and it carries its own issues. That said, for many it is about family gatherings and an excuse to eat good food, and that’s the sort of feeling I’d like this contest to take inspiration from. Oscar is all about the chance for a feast!
Since it’s a short contest and it’s pretty chill, for now I have only a few prizes up for grabs. If I get a lot of entries, I can reconsider that and I’ll announce it as soon as I know.

I’m guessing most people who follow me know who Oscar is from at least one story, but just in case, here’s a link to a few example pictures. Let me know if you need links to other resources about him; there are lots of stories out there to choose from.
In order to enter, you can post your entry on Tumblr or DeviantArt (if you don’t have an account on either, Archive of Our Own is also acceptable for writing). Then either send me a note here or @ me on Tumblr(I am neonthewrite there). I’ll make a post with entries (or possibly add them to this one). If you made an entry and don’t see yours added to the list after a reasonable amount of time, let me know! There’s a chance I might miss it.
Food Day?Oscar cleaned his pantry, it was almost food day. There were a lot of humans in the hotel. So the promise of food galore had him busy, a bit too busy to notice a familiar giggle.
“Hey Oscar, what are you doing?” The borrower jumped and lost his balance and was caught by a familiar hatted female that visit sometimes. When he first met her, he swore she was insane especially how often she spoke of different dimensions and causing trouble for Dean and Sam Winchester’s father now and again.
“Hattie, why do you always sneak up on me?” Oscar wasn't mad, but he squirm in her arms.
“It's almost Thanksgiving my dear! Time for food and pie!” Oscar giggled at her excitement for the pastry, she sounded a lot like Dean.
She let him down as he grabbed his hook and bag, the borrower followed and both jolted in surprise as a familiar human’s voice spoke out, “Hey Sammy? Jacob? You two think Oscar is up for a little Thanksgiving joy?”
Food DayThe number of guests in the motel was up. Foot traffic had increased in and out of the lobby, humans milling around with their bags and possessions and small children close by their sides.
Oscar knew just what that meant, even as the air outside turned from warm to cool and the leaves had fallen, leaving only twisted branches holding up the sky.
Food day was coming.
Preparation for the big day started well in advance.
Oscar’s normal chores increased. He took his pantry, moving around the scant pickings and shuffling the few possessions he kept in there to increase the amount of space he would have. He took the time to seek out plastic wrap, aluminum foil, bits and pieces he could wrap up his takings.
These went into a pile in the corner, carefully folded and separated. The plastic wrap, because of its habit of sticking to itself, was placed in the order of one sheet of plastic wrap, one sheet of aluminum, another sheet of plastic wrap, and so on until he was satisfied.

Oscars Food Day Unseen
Oscar crept through the walls of the Knights Hotel. He didn’t have to say the Three U’s out loud, not since he was a little kid on some of his first scavenger hunts. He padded along on unfinished wood, the dust at his feet a reminder that he had not been in this wing of the hotel in a long time. Still, he knew every flaw in the path that would betray him with a squeak or groan. He jumped over these areas with an expertise that came from fear of capture. There was no motivation quite so convincing as fear.
Oscar came upon a vent protruding from the ceiling, the large metal box ending in the wall next to him. He stopped and leaned his ear against the cold surface. He could not hear anything, not even a TV blaring. He knew this method of checking to see if the room beyond occupied was not foolproof, but it helped him avoid wasting valuable time searching for food and supplies.
