101st Airborne Division 'Screaming Eagles', 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. September 17th 1944, Operation Market Garden was a combined arms airborne/ground offensive devised by field marshal Montgomery to capture a series of bridges in Holland. The American 101st Division was assigned to secure the first three bridges at Son, Oedenrode and Veghel to allow the British XXX Corps to cross. Though objectives where met initially, the overall success of the operation fell short as the final bridge over the Rhine was never taken. The Division then resumed a fierce struggle for many weeks fighting along 'Hell's Highway' to maintain the fragile salient.
