Oderus Urungus by PixelPirate Oderus Urungus by PixelPirate
I started this personal project in December 2013. At the time it was just a regular piece of fan art. Then Dave Brockie died in March 2014 and it turned into a tribute piece. It’s actually taken me some time to cope with his death, which is also why I left it for a while until I finished it in August 2014. I’m pretty bummed I didn’t get it done to show him in time. I grew up with GWAR, got to know them back in ’95 when Ragnarok was released. I was 13 years old, and as with all the other bohabs, I just got it. I loved the gore, the music, the stories, the humor and everything. GWAR is the single most important band and influence for me growing up and still is. A lot of that was because of Dave and who he was as a person and as a badass alien war mongering lead throat thing of the most dangerous band on this or any other planet. I will miss his voice and wit on future GWAR releases, but applaud their decision to carry on as he would’ve wanted. R.I.P. and thanks for everything Dave.

I ended up having 24 subtools and around 60-70 million polygons for all the pieces on him. Almost all of the geometry was created in ZBrush as was my intention. Only bits modelled in Maya are the eyes. ZRemeshing and UV layouts were done in ZBrush, all texturing was done within ZBrush with a little help from Photoshop. Beard and hair was done with FiberMesh. Rendered in KeyShot.

I’ve prepared the image in some different wallpaper sizes you can download from…

R.I.P. David.

Will totally miss him.  Been going to the shows since "Scumdogs" (yes, I'm old).

Talked to him a couple of times after the show.  He was a nice guy.  Met most of the band out of costume throughout the years.

I only got to see them three times here in Denmark. First time I was 15 I think, shouted Oderus at him as I recognized him by his tattoo on his back, he turns with his fist in the air smiling and looking around to figure out who shouted. However I was too young and star struck to follow up on my shouting so he just kept moving back stage. :)
