https://www.pixelfish.portfoliobox.me/ - This is my new work portfolio. It's primarily for my UI work for video games, but there's still an illustration section. :)

Help Out Our Canadian Friends

0 min read
I know many of my Canadian friends have done their part over the years whenever disaster has struck in the US. I was there during 9-11 and saw firsthand how generous Canadians can be when their southern neighbour has needed their help. So I'm asking you now to take a few minutes to see if there's something you can give to the people of Southern Alberta, who have just been hit with what is possibly the most devastating flood of their lifetime. Over 100K people have been displaced and many homes have been lost. The flooding has struck at small towns (Canmore, High River, Medicine Hat) and large cities (Calgary's neighbourhoods and downtown were

Tonight I had an epic adventure. I went to the Target downtown looking for the camera I want, which they had for 150 less than Amazon, but only for today. They were out. They told me the Target in Colma had one and the Target in Serramonte had two. So I went to Colma. No luck. Walked to Serramonte, found out that when Target says it has one at a store (UPC in system), they mean the display model which they will not sell you. (Would have been nice to know this two Targets ago.) Ran (and I mean, literally, RAN, as in on my feet) all over suburbia. Suburbia is scary btw. The sidewalks run out for no reason. They don't warn you, they just stop.

Hey there, I came across your profile after seeing the color studies you just uploaded. I wanted to say that I really enjoy your work! I also really appreciate your latest journal update, since I'm working on navigating the waters of freelancing myself. I still have quite a ways to go, and I'm not even through school yet, but it can be rather daunting and I want to start early getting a grasp on things. How has that gone for you in the 34 weeks since posting that, any luck with establishing yourself more as an illustrator?
Well, actually in the last year, we've gone through a lot of upheaval. Since my husband had lost his job (and since got another one) it didn't seem like a good idea for me to try the freelance track since I was the one with health insurance.

And since then, we've moved to San Francisco, and I found a new job at Kabam. So been feeling really inspired seeing all the wonderful art my coworkers have been making, but sticking with the day job for now. :)
That's fantastic to hear, even if it's not freelance. Do you have any tips for finding a day job like that?
Well, the portfolio seems to be the key to getting an interview. Also if you have any sort of design skills, and can do Flash, it's useful. Lots of game companies want UI and it's really under-represented at the moment. (Flash devs that can write AS are even harder to get.) Being part of a non-glutted discipline really helps.
