Chun Li: Hyaku Retsu Kyaku by PixelArtPaintings Chun Li: Hyaku Retsu Kyaku by PixelArtPaintings
Also known as the "Lightning Kick," Chun-Li's signature move. (I really hope she does something like this in the new movie! :))

I learned a lot while making this painting. Had a lot of trouble with it too. About halfway through I realized there were mistakes that I had made and no way I could fix them, so I was forced to start the whole thing over again, except for her grounded foot. Due to it being such a time-consuming process, it was really painful to do that. After re-graphing and repainting, that's what you see here.

Due to Guildhall taking up 90% of all my time, I hardly had any time to work on it either. So it took me about 6 months, with about a 4 month hiatus in-between. This was definitely the most difficult and meticulously detailed sprite painting I have done thus far. This picture absolutely does not do this painting any justice...

Acrylic on a 16"x20" canvas.
Pixels are .5cm!
Chun-Li is made of 15-colors, including the white.

I'd love to do the entire cast of SSFIIT, all posing in their signature moves, but time, effort, and downright HARD WORK is keeping me from doing that right now. Maybe someday...

I didn't know that people did this sort of style by hand - really amazing!  How do you do it?

Beautiful painting, I'm tempting to try a pixel style painting myself now.

is that facetiousness or are you being truthful?

Quite serious. I know about pixel art painting, true, but the only other piece I can remember off the top of my head was from Chrono Trigger (which I would have loved just for that reason).

I'm having difficulty classifying my feelings about this style. In theory it shouldn't be any different than using, say, a photograph as a model for a painting. Yet it evokes something ... different. Perhaps it has an esoteric quality, speaking to those who were weaned on NES and SNES graphics. But I would go so far as to call it meta-art. Art that says something about art; what art is, what it could be. But this is just the vain attempt to classify my gut reaction, a task I feel I have not accomplished.

At the very least, pixel art is something that many find difficult - far more difficult than it appears. And the act of bringing it into a more traditional medium is more daunting still - how do you fix a miss-colored or misaligned painted square, as you suggest in your comments. Paint over a mistake and you'll have curiously raised sections. Although I suppose if done properly you could make it appear made out of Tetris pieces as well :D

Kudos: for the time, the effort, and the willingness to see it the end.

This is great. I love the eveness of the pixels and the clean color changes. Looks fantastic.
