Wedding Dress to Two Christening Dresses by pinkythepink Wedding Dress to Two Christening Dresses by pinkythepink
These photos aren't the best but it's what I have to work with. :) One day I'll know how to take proper photos of clothing. As for these kiddos: I have permission from their mother (also pictured) to post.

The grand majority of the work here belongs to my teacher, JoAnn. We were in a massive time rush and since she has 70+ years of experience and I have just 3... Well, it was a lot better for her to do the heavy lifting and get it done rather than sit over my shoulder instructing me on the steps. That said - I did do most of the slip work (not pictured), hand stitched all the clasps and hook-and-eyes in, and finished the older girl's dress's front hem by hand because all that beading can't go into the sewing machine.

The top two photos show our start, the wedding dress that she brought to us to be used as, essentially, material fabric. I chopped off the back panel (there on the floor) which had the two bead designs on each of the new dresses. We were able to maintain those patterns in almost their entirety, only a few beads had to be restitched by hand (by me) and very few had to be replaced. There's enough of the original wedding dress left that a new dress could be made from it, we didn't touch the bodice at all. :la:

Great job both of you! I can see the oldest girl is thrilled with her new dress too, which really is the best stamp of approval anyone can get :D

Wow... that's a great idea! And the two resulting dresses both look simply amazing.
I think you did a great job with both of them!

I like the idea of reusing a wedding dress, too. I never quite understood the appeal of keeping (or worse yet, trashing) a wedding dress. They are usually made from such beautiful fabric. It's a total waste not to do anything with them! :XD:

Thanks much, CJ!

I totallllly agree with you. The only reason I see to keep a dress is with the idea that someone else will be able to wear it, or if you're going to do some sort of crazy display in your house. :eager: But otherwise, I mean, yeah! Make it into new stuff. It's so expensive to just wear it for one day and then not extend its life.

You are more than welcome! I love them!

That's exactly it!
... except... I don't know about this "keeping it so someone else can wear it" business. I have seen people who wear their mother or their grandmother's wedding dresses, but that's very rare. In this day and age, the mere possibility that you are in the same shape as your mother or grandmother when they were younger is so slim that this is just a difficult thing to accomplish. Better to take the dresses to make them into something else! :XD:

That's very true hahaha, but I still think it's a nice dream for people to have. There's a show on TLC I watch with my mom sometimes, It's callllllledddd.... dang, what was it. Love it or leave it, maybe? I'm super unsure of the title. But it's about them bringing old wedding dresses in and getting them remade into new wedding dresses, like maintaining the original structure/details/etc of the mom's dress while bringing it up to date for the new bride. I feel like we did a bit of that with these dresses, except we got double the use. :la:
