Description

I had been hoping for a new line of Dolls ever since Crystal first debuted and it looks like I finally (sort of) got my wish! Sadly, Usagi is the only one (so far?) but I'll take it!

I originally wanted to have my old Irwin Super Sailor Moon doll next to her for a comparison, but I'm sad to say it seems she is in rougher shape than I remembered. ^^;  Perhaps cleaning her up and attempting to restore her a bit (along with the others) will be another project for another day, but for now it's just going to have to be a written comparison/review:

For starters: she is smaller than I was hoping... considerably smaller. The old Irwin Doll were 11.5"-12" (the same as regular Barbie dolls at the time) and so I Was hoping this new doll would be, but she seems to be more 8"-10". It would be the PERFECT size for Chibi Moon if they had done her along Usagi (which.... they totally should have) but if this is the standard for this style, then so bit, I guess.

I also noticed that the pictures online seemed to indicate her arms and legs could bend, but upon arrival I'm not seeing any joints. (It's possible her gloves are boots are simply covering them, but I'm not taking her out of the box) They also pictured her sitting on a cute little crescent that I was hoping would be included as a stand, but again, this doesn't seem to be the case. I will not, however, the price  for this doll WAS a bit cheaper than I was anticipating at first, so I guess that may be why.

NOW onto the good stuff; The visual details, by comparison, are a VAST improvement!  Her hair looks so, so, SO much better than the old Irwin Dolls! They managed to actually give a semblance of her trademark buns, and they even curled the "pigtails", unlike most* of the dolls before this, which just had straight pigtails. The beads for the "shields" in her hair also look a little more proportional and flatter (though, they still have that annoying loop in the back that makes them stick out, but I suppose there is not much else they can do to secure it to the band)
(* I seem to recall hearing of either a German or Danish doll that included the buns, but this was an account from an old website many years ago)
I honestly have no ideas how the feathers are held in place on her head, I can't see any sign of them being sewn or anything. My only guess is that they are somehow pinned to her head directly, but they look SO much better than the (incorrectly) gold headbands the other dolls came with.
The Tiara and earrings looks about to be about the same as the old dolls, so it, unfortunately, sticks out a bit but the bangs seems to do a better job of hiding where the holes would be if it were removed. (I used to take the tiara off of my old doll all the time for "Moon Tiara, Action!") Personally, I'd have liked it if the earrings were the same metallic gold as the Tiara, but that's a minor nitpick.
The face... still doesn't look entirely accurate (specifically, the eyes) but this was a problem with the old dolls too, so, par for the course. At the very least, they look much more detailed.

Onto the clothes: The choker... actually seems a bit too tick, but I'll give that a pass since I assume it's for a sake of detail. The brooch and "belt buckle" are much more detailed, however, the old dolls were accurate to the detail-level of the anime at the time as well and they have the same problem as the "shields" with, essentially, being buttons and sticking out a bit.
The "belt" area, sadly, isn't the greatest. Super Sailor Moon has a double "ridge" above her skirt , a yellow "belt" and a white one, and for this style simply used a yellow ribbon that appears loose. I don't think the Irwin dolls did much here, either, but it would have been nice if the yellow part at least laid completely flat.
The sleeves and the ribbon in the back, however, are high-notes. They are made of a sheer material and have just a hint of pink to them, where as some dolls I have seen pictures of just leave these features the same opaque white at the majority of the outfit, making it look too white and downing out the small pop of color in the skirt. We were lucky in the US that the old Irwin Dolls DID care enough to also use a sheer material, but they also added a bit of glitter to it (which, amazingly, has survived on my doll) and which I'd have loved to see here
The skirt is another major highlight for this doll. They managed to incorporate the lovely gradient seen in the manga rather than just a stripe of yellow and a stripe of blue. Admittedly, this was, again, accurate to the detail of the anime at the time, but it's still nice to see. The pleats on the skirt also seem much cleaner/sharper and, while not technically accurate, they even gave her a cute little petticoat underneath to help the skirt flare out more and potentially help preserve the pleats.
The gloves and boots appear about the same quality as the old dolls, which makes the gloves essentially elongated mittens. I kinda wish they could have just painted her hands and forearms so the fingers could be visible, but again, par for the course so minor nitpick.

The final detail is her Moon Kaleidoscope accessory which is acually painted here, rather than just metallic gold plastic like all of the old wands used to me. Admittedly, here they could have almost gotten away with just leaving it gold based on the manga color scheme, but it's nice to see that they cared to add a bit more detail.
