Jurassic Giant

Yep, I'm still alive.

This drawing depicts what is hands down my favorite carnosaur - Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis. Although it was a giant at the time it lived at an adult total lenght of around 11 m - only outclassed by Morrison super-allosaurs and maybe some Torvosaurus specimens - surprisingly little is made of that fact. However, this individual is based on the holotype, a still beefy (~8 m long) subadult. The tall nasal ridges, and high vertebral spines above and around its hip region, are the most obvious features of Yangchuanosaurus, and, IMHO, make it look quite a bit cooler than many of its relatives.

Despite the still obvious GSP influence, I've opted for a more fleshy creature with much less "clear" shapes, especially in the tall neck (quite a bit of substance above the spines), and the upper leg, which is partially encased in the body/hip/caudofemoralis mass.

Reference by Greg Paul, specimen number's CV 00215.

Thanks! I'm confident I could do better now, but, as my journal says, I've got bigger and more difficult stuff to finish first.

Thanks! I'm actually not quite happy with today it when I look at it, especially when it comes to the shape of the tail and the shading on its body, but I still like its head too.

1. Likely not.
2. Likely not. The largest fragmentary Tyrannosaurus specimens can't be conclusively shown to be bigger than FMNH PR 2081 ("Sue"), which is ~12.3 m/somewhere between 6 and 10 tonnes.

I don't know if I fully understand what you're writing, but the size of these individual allosaurs hasn't changed over the decades, and their size estimates didn't change much either. There are some very large individuals, but I strongly doubt they reached adult Tyrannosaurus in mass - thus, they were smaller.

Awesome, in my book it's second only to Spinosaurus and Acrocanthosaurus!

Great drawing! Yangchuanosaurus is my favorite carnosaur too (along with Chilantaisaurus); it's sad that little mention its truly gigantic size.

Agreed, and thanks for your kind words!

It was more robust, so it would weigh more than an allosaur of the same length, right?

Well, I worded it poorly, so thanks for pointing that out. It's no more massive than an allosaur of the same length, but bigger skull, longer teeth - more obvious equipment of a regular killer of big game.
