Christine does not approve of your sexist game mechanics!

This one is for the boyfriend, who is a big fan of the character. (and rather sulky he gets bounced.) Another cameo absolutely no one requested or suggested! :D

A brief explanation: Geralt of Rivia is from the video games/novels/Polish TV series 'The Witcher'. He is a magic-potion-enhanced (cat-like eyes, super reflexes...) mutant sorcerer&swordsman trained from a young age to slaughter nasty beasties. Witchers travel the land, a rather grim and f*cked up fantasy setting, hiring themselves out to local lords having trouble with marsh ogres or cursed princesses, stuff like that. The novels rather hilariously describe how feared/reviled they are - when Geralt enters a town, "dogs howl, cats hide and small children start crying."
He is an angsty aaaangsty character à la Drizz't, always musing on his outcast nature and whether the monsters are truly the ones he's paid to kill.
His world has, among other nonhuman races, the classic fantasy Elves - forest-dwelling arrow-happy xenophobes - but also is occasionally visited by the Wild Hunt, a dimension-hopping spectral horde of properly weird and powerful Fair Folk, and one of his main story arcs is trying to find his on-again-off-again love-of-his-life Yennefer, a wonderfully neurotic and extremely powerful sorceress, when she is abducted by the Fae.

The card thing has to do with a gameplay aspect in the first video game - Geralt gets to have a LOT of Optional Sexual Encounters, despite having regular girlfriends (he is amnesiac when it comes to Yennefer for a long time). Like, it is well ridiculous. In-story this is actually fairly reasonable and justified - all the potions Geralt ingested while training and growing up render him both immune to most human diseases and sterile. HOW CONVENIENT for all those medieval wenches, dryads, renegade princesses, courtesans, sexy female scholars...., who can show their gratitude for Geralt having saved their town/killed their abusive pimp/written them a poem/brought them flowers. And because all video game developpers and players are male these nubile young ladies are really very very grateful. Or just friendly. Or curious about human mating rituals. Or horny succubi. Or... Anyway - the gimmick is, the player gets a souvenir of each time he scores by obtaining a rather nicely-painted, Art Nouveau-esque card depicting the sexy lady he has just banged. The "gotta collect 'em all!!" trophy-like aspect strikes me as ridiculous and offensive and hilarious all at once.
(You gotta hope he didn't strike up a conversation with Ash Ketchum while they were waiting outside...)

Hie thee to Wikipedia or TVTropes for more info.

Don't expect many video game characters in the comic, however, this was an exception. (and there were novels to begin with, so hey.)

OMG I had no idea that that was a thing! XD Sooo awkward lol

I'm a middling fan of the show, pretty 'meh' about the books, and I have only seen The Witcher III: The Wild Hunt, but I'm starting to warm to the Witcher fandom.

Will Jaskier be popping by any time soon? He's my favourite character from the tv series; seriously, watching clips of him and Geralt interacting convinced me to watch the show.

Frankly a disease free guranteed sterile man in medieval times sounds like a good deal to me. If I swung that way anyway or had any inclination to do anyone ever. XD

Yaaaaay, Geralt!!! Well, if it's about finding a monster hunter, of course the witcher has to be in :D

Ah, Geralt, truly the Odysseus of video games.
Just because he's looking for a girl doesn't mean he can't have fun along the way...

It kind of does. People tend to prefer monogamy.
Graupe's avatar
Well, that's Geralt...In the books AND in the games he tends to "get side-tracked", as Jareth puts it XD

My main gripe is the creators of the game making one-night stands into a collectible card game.
If that's not objectification of women I don't know what is.
NimbleFlourish's avatar
I don't really see the issue, it's not like their real people and it's not like sexy images are a crime. Heck IRL couples send each other dirty pics. Not to mention all the porn and pinups.
Honestly I think this anti-sex thing does women more harm than good, one day mark my words someone is going to force us all into Burkas "for our own protection" insulting imo.

You're either very confused or strawmanning what I said. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and as if it's the former.
The game treats sex like an achievement and literally turns it into a collectible card game. It adds nothing to the game itself. It actually goes against the game in places, since Geralt has real romance options.
I'm not against sex (it's enjoyable and fun), I"m against the objectification of women. Are you playing the game to have sex with fake women or are you playing the game to hunt monsters and solve problems?
If you think being anti-objectification is anti-sex that says more about you than me.
NimbleFlourish's avatar
What's wrong with objectification? Characters are objectified all the time in porn and in fiction. Jareth is objectified in this comic with every sexy pose he strikes. The only time objectification is wrong in my eyes is when it's done against real people who don't wish for it. But there's plenty of consensual objectification in certain types of foreplay.

Nice of you to try to pin that "that says more about you" cliche on me. But the jokes on you I never intend to even have sex, so your idea that it says something about my sex life and how I treat people I'm attracted to, is not only off base but based entirely in unreality.

I also haven't played the games, mainly because they don't allow a female protag and I like my rpgs to let me Role Play. But if I did play the game why on earth couldn't I do BOTH?

Besides, you ARE anti-sex otherwise you'd have no problem with players "having sex with fake women" it's clear to me you think sex somehow taints or weakens women. After all there's more than one kind of objectification but you only care about the sexual kind.

I've got every right to complain when a game bases 100% completion on one-night stands. The cards add nothing to the game and serve no purpose. It's like the sex minigames in the God of War series.

You don't play the game and don't intent to, you haven't had sex and don't intend to (as if you could given your obvious issues), you're the one who commented on my comment, and you've used logical fallacies and outright bullshit with no valid claims. so there's literally no reason for you to complain other than butthurt.

Now go away, I've got no more time for your whining and name-calling.
Graupe's avatar
Hahaha, but then, maybe it was just Gwent cards, after all...
NimbleFlourish's avatar
Well he blocked me -_- Tsk "whining and name-calling", for the record I didn't call him any names (anti-sex is not a name it's a statement) and he's the one who decided to imply there was something wrong with my interpersonal relationships and state of mind.

He didn't even address anything I said just dodge it and imply I was a terrible damaged person. If objectification is really so bad you'd think he'd be able to prove it. -_-

I'm tired of people getting offended over fictional characters and I'm tired of people trying to blur the line between fiction and reality. I don't think it's healthy or helpful. Apparently that's a "logical fallacy" or "outright bullshit" but it seems pretty logical to me.

I wonder if Jareth actually knows where Yennefer is? Just musing over that, my friend plays this game so it sparks an interest.

Huh.
I'll assume that his presence in GND means he is not quite up to date with the Wild Hunt's whereabouts and plans, though he may have been involved with them at some point.

Interestin assumptions...Makes one wonder...And if eralt threatens Jareth like that...hmmmm...*pondering*

Jareth, if you want to be useful right now, provide a couple of weapons for the ladies(ASAP). I prefer a wooden sword or a bat. Let the ladies unleash their feminine fury and come back when they have calmed down...and no guilt-tripping.

OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE MY EYES, YOU INCLUDED GERALT!!!! I didn't think this was possible, but I love you and your comic even more now:)

At this rate they're going to disqualify everyone for helping them. I feel sorry for Jareth, but that was a smooth escape. (The fact that Yennefer has been abducted by fae explains why Jareth ended up in that position)
NimbleFlourish's avatar
I don't really mind the whole Witcher thing it's a little juvenile but I don't really think it's offensive. In fact I'm a bit bummed there's no female version...what? Why are you looking at me like that? It's perfectly natural okay.

I was being all completionist and it kinda just happened. What can I say I wanted to explore all the conversation options....
