Magpie and mouse by Photosbykev Magpie and mouse by Photosbykev
This was taken whilst I was watching a Short-eared Owl hunting for mice for vole. The SEO thought he was being clever by hiding his kill in small holes and under tuffs of grass. Presumably so he could come back later when he was hungry.

Well the local pair of magpies definately had this owl sorted lol. The owl would hide the kill and the magpies were there the moment the owl flew off to hunt. Fascinating to watch

Magpies are equal parts beautiful and intelligent...and this piece captures that wonderfully!

I can appreciate a good Maggie pic...they're often times rather skittish.

Magpies are gorgeous - I love these colours.  I love this pose, and the mouse in its mouth.  I love photographs of unusual bird behaviours like this.

Ravens ~ so also magpies ~ are totally intelligent birds. It's really stunning. Why hunt, if somebody else does it for you (:
I once watche a crow hiding some parts of it's prey, as the crow realised it was watched (by some close other crows) it flew back to the hideaway and took the prey away to hide it somewhere else.
A totally beautiful bird. Love it.

What an extraordinary picture! Containing a lot of action while still having perfect focus. Magpies are so common it is easy to forget how beautiful they are... And i'm always impressed by the patience nature photografers must have before one gets a good opportunity for a picture.

I must say, this is a most incredible capture!
This is the most amazing shot of a magpie I've ever seen; I've always thought they were beautiful, but it's lovely to see it captured.

This is stunning! I didn't know their wings had a blue tinge to them!

Amazing, they can even dupe owls! Such an interesting behaviour.

Well, that's a new trick to me. I've seen magpies take advantage of things before, but to stalk an owl for its food is a new one. :D Love them little devils.

I love Magpies. This one is captured on the perfect time. We can see the beauty of her wings, as the shining on the tail's feather. I'm not very good with english, I hope you understand me.

The magpie reminds me of a blue jay, only it has more black and white than blue. I love how the flight feathers are all spread out so you can see them.

I was going to say you were lucky to get this shot, but it's not QUITE what you were trying to get!

I was also going to say, "Poor mouse," but that IS nature's way. Some creatures do have to kill before they can eat. :stab: :pointr: :chew:

"Poor hamburger." "Poor pork chop." "Poor chicken leg... "
LupinLuva Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2007
that's a nice shot... i like how its wings go out like that:)

excellent shot ....

Very beautiful. You caught one of nature's best moments. I myself am a photographer, though I don't post my photos on here. There aren't Magpies around here, so I tend to photograph wild horses, cyotes, cougars, falcons, and desert rabbits. The focuse is brilliant.
