So I've been binge watching Family Matters recently. As a kid I remember it was one of my favorite shows. And these first few seasons I was really amazed at what a great character Steve Urkel was. When your younger you only notice the goofiness. But when I look at it now I see what a great role model he was. During adolescence the majority of us try to bury who we are to adopt more socially acceptable traits. But Steve was well URKEL and very few times was he ashamed of that. He waved his nerd flag with pride. And at heart he was a good person. Always happy to help always willing to lend a hand.
I guess that's why as Im watching the later seasons Im starting to get annoyed by Stefan Urkel. When I was a kid I thought it was a neat plot twist. A fun character popping in from time to time. But now that I'm older I see how he's really a bad thing. Anyone who's even had a passing exposure to the show will remember Steve is absolutely in love with the girl next door, Laura Winslow. He goes to absurd lengths to gain her affection throughout the series and for the most part she rejects him.
As a frequent occupant of the friend zone I understand that sometimes chemistry isnt there and love can't blossom. So I'm sympathetic to Steve for being unable to win Laura's heart because she's just not into him. But when Stve gains the ablity to transform into a hipper smother version of himself she falls head over heels. And at first this was cute but at one point Laura TRICKS Steve into transforming and staying transformed so she gets what she wants. At one point Steves then girlfriend begs him to change back to the man she loves. Laura just sits there and watches Stefan break this girls heart. From this point on I can't seem to watch the show. All I see is a selfish person who won't give a great person a chance unless he's "Lookin so foine and smellin so good" I think as a parent I'd have a problem with this message.
Or maybe Im looking too much into this?
Well that's why I'm posting this on DA. Cause I'm pretty sure no one will read this
