Description
Design: The K4 was the primary passenger locomotive for the PRR from 1914 until the end of steam use. It was the first scientifically developed locomotive, using a treadmill and sensors to measure performance.
Size: The K4 was 83 ft 6 in long and weighed 468,000 lb.
Performance: The K4 could easily pull 12 coaches at over 100 mph on level ground.
Production: The PRR built 425 K4s between 1914 and 1928.
Features: The K4 had a boxy oil-burning headlight, round numberplate, and long wooden pilot in the early years. Later models had an electric headlight mounted on a bracket and a pilot made of horizontal steel bars.
Nicknames: One K4, the PRR 1361, was nicknamed "The Juniata Jewel" and "The Spirit of Altoona".
Preservation: The K4 1361 is a restored steam locomotive that is used for living history activities, including narrated tours, theatrical events, and live steam demonstrations
