Description
NJ Transit's F40PH locomotives, particularly the F40PH-2CAT rebuilds, are a significant part of the agency's history and commuter rail operations. These locomotives, originally built by EMD, are known for their 3,000-horsepower engines and ability to reach speeds of 103 mph. NJ Transit acquired 17 F40PHs in 1981, and later rebuilt them with auxiliary Caterpillar diesel head-end-power (HEP) units, reclassifying them as F40PH-2CATs. These locomotives served on various lines, including the North Jersey Coast Line and the Long Branch to Bay Head shuttle. NJ Transit has also recognized their history with Conrail, which operated passenger trains in New Jersey from 1976 to 1983, by repainting an F40PH-2B locomotive into Conrail colors.
