Nickname
The AEM-7 locomotives are nicknamed "toasters" because of their boxy shape and "meatballs" because they were based on the Swedish SJ Rc4 locomotive.
Speed
AEM-7 locomotives could reach speeds of 125 mph.
History
The AEM-7 locomotives were built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) and ASEA from 1978 to 1988. Amtrak purchased 54 of the locomotives for use on the Keystone Corridor and Northeast Corridor.
Replacement
The AEM-7 locomotives were eventually replaced by Siemens ACS64 electric locomotives and high-speed Acela trainsets.
Farewell trip
In 2016, Amtrak ran a "Farewell to the AEM7" trip from Washington to Philadelphia and back.
Use on the Keystone Corridor
The AEM-7 locomotives are used on the Harrisburg-New York Keystone Service. The locomotives "pull" westbound trains and "push" eastbound trains.
Fan favorite
The AEM-7 locomotives were a fan favorite and were considered one of the most reliable locomotives Amtrak ever owned
