Description

Nickname

The AEM-7 locomotives are nicknamed "toasters" because of their boxy shape and "meatballs" because they were based on the Swedish SJ Rc4 locomotive.

Speed

AEM-7 locomotives could reach speeds of 125 mph.

History

The AEM-7 locomotives were built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) and ASEA from 1978 to 1988. Amtrak purchased 54 of the locomotives for use on the Keystone Corridor and Northeast Corridor.

Replacement

The AEM-7 locomotives were eventually replaced by Siemens ACS64 electric locomotives and high-speed Acela trainsets.

Farewell trip

In 2016, Amtrak ran a "Farewell to the AEM7" trip from Washington to Philadelphia and back.

Use on the Keystone Corridor

The AEM-7 locomotives are used on the Harrisburg-New York Keystone Service. The locomotives "pull" westbound trains and "push" eastbound trains.

Fan favorite

The AEM-7 locomotives were a fan favorite and were considered one of the most reliable locomotives Amtrak ever owned
