Polar Bear 1 by petra128 Polar Bear 1 by petra128
You have no idea how excited I was to see this bear. Meet Victor, the older (and dirtier) of YWP's two new polar bears! Unfortunately, this is the only decent photo I have of him. The others are all of him asleep, or hidden behind a rock.

Victor is a sixteen year old male who has been retired from the European breeding programme to prevent inbreeding. He arrived in August 2014, but this is the first time I've been since he first came on show. He shares his enclosure with another male called Pixel, who arrived last month- however, Pixel was asleep in his outdoor cave all day today so I don't have any photos of him yet. Pixel and Victor are apparently the only polar bears in England at the moment, but that's going to change soon- the zoo is building three more enclosures, and apparently will have the potential to house up to twelve polar bears once everything is completed.

To give you an idea of how strong Victor (who weighs 500 kilograms) is, according to the keeper at the talk, when he first came to the zoo there was a solid steel water trough in his enclosure. A few days later, he decided he didn't like it, tipped it over and started bouncing his front paws on it until it broke. Once he had broken the bottom, he dragged it into his lake and it's still there now.

Tell me about it! I didn't know what to expect when I went to see these two, and it amazed me to realise just how big a polar bear really is.
