The whole thing is not just about all having the same cutie mark, it's about them being the same in every possible level. The = cutie mark removed the strength of Applejack, who couldn't buck down the door. Or Rainbow Dash who couldn't fly fast anymore (RD's limit may be debatable because her special talent is her speed).
That means that the whole "being the same" is to make everyone be equal in every single aspect of life. Like in the movie "Harrison Bergeron" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison…
They live in the same kind of houses, wear the same king of clothes, have the same haircuts, eat the same food, etc.

Sugar Belle states that she cannot bake better than anyone at the village, which means that everyone has to bake equally as good, or equally as bad as everyone else, regardless of their skills. Everyone has the same cloaks to wear and they cannot be better or worse than anything else anyone else wears. All the houses have the same architecture, and all the ponies had the same haircuts. During the song we can clearly see that Starlight quickly stops any form of individuality on the spot, when she fixes the hairdo of a mare that wasn't wearing her hair in the same way as the others, or when another mare was dancing to a different pace as all the others. And of course how to forget how Sugar Belle, Party Favor and Night Glider needed to talk to the mane 6 in secret so no other pony would know about it.

Also, everyone is watching everyone. There is no need for a secret police, or a "Big Brother is watching you" spell by Starlight, because everyone is policing everyone else.

And then there is the reeducation room. It is clear that the mane 6 would have been forced to stay in there until they accepted Starlight's views and ideals. They had their cutie marks taken away and replaced them with the = cutie mark, which made them be the same as everypony else: Fluttershy couldn't talk to birds, Rarity couldn't tell if the curtains were nice or not. Pinkie Pie couldn't be overly happy or exited... the room had no beds, no other form of entertainment but the books placed there by Starlight. Nothing to eat but hay and water (sort of like bread and water thing in prisons), and no decoration other than the Equality posters and the clock on the door so all you can tell is how long you were in there. And of course the speaker saying the same things over and over 24/7: “In sameness there is peace.” “Exceptionalism is a lie” “Free yourself from your cutie mark” “Choose equality as your special talent.” “Difference is frustration” “To excel is to fail” “Be your best by never being your best” “Conformity will set you free” “Accept your limitations and happiness will follow” “You’re no better than your friends.”
Even if a pony's special talent is lockpicking, they would be unable to open the door to escape because they would no longer be able to because they had the = cutie mark! One has to wonder if Twilight had problems thinking of an escape plane because the = cutie mark was dampening her usual intelligence (I don't think so, being smart doesn't seem to have anything to do with her special talent, but still, I think its a valid question)

Just how long would they had endured it? theequalitygroup.deviantart.co…
