Hello, everyone!

I apologize for not posting much this month--after the explosion on my block, there has been a lot of rearranging, detouring, and unexpected delays in my cityt lots of things have been throwing me unexpected curveballs. I have five and a half weeks left until school begins, had the day job lined up to work with my class schedule unexpectedly fall through, unpredictable weather, and... I'm not even sure what else! Haha! It's been a whirlwind.

I also took a brief summer class that sucked up most of my time this month--worth it and life-changing, but MAN, have I been busy with that!

Also, those of you who have known me a long time know that I have a rare nervous system disorder and that I have zero contact with any family (including all immediate and all extended) for several years now. Good news: still no symptoms returning after two months, and I am finally able to get back into shape for modeling again now that I'm off the medications.

Crazy but surprisingly good news: on the third anniversary of the last time I saw my blood relatives, I decided to drive to my home town (it's only 2000 people and 2 hours from where I live now) to take photos of some places I loved and say goodbye to them and get some closure. I got lost on the way up, which... I guess is a good thing? I lost the resonator on my muffler (as in, it was deteriorating and I had the money to replace it but the part hadn't come in yet... didn't realize how bad it was... and suddenly it separated from the rest of the exhaust system and was dragging on the ground by the time I got home). I thought I was going to be stranded up there in the worst possible place I could be--and also, there's no cell reception! LOL I got home safe though, got my car fixed the next day, and it runs better than ever now.

I drove past my parents' house.

My entire family was parked there, ironically. I was terrified of getting caught on my entire trip (everyone is related or knows everyone else), even though my car is different, my hair is different, and I wore sunglasses and a giant hat to hide my face. Interestingly, I panicked more in other places. (Like the gas station I stopped at to make sure my car remained safe enough to drive.)

I felt good about it in the end. I faced my biggest fear. I got my closure. All the things I suffered didn't hurt in the same intensity anymore.

Wow, have I come a long, long way.

my neighbourhood was evacuated yesterday while i was at dinner with my boyfriend. the bar on the end of my block blew up, and the fire took out three additional buildings across the street. there was a gas leak (one of the local gas lines got hit by a construction crew by accident). there were 2 deaths, and only about 5 or 6 critical injuries, last i heard they will pull through.

we watched the fire jump from the bar on the left, hit the cars destroyed in the photo, and leap to the other side of the street and torch the trees before we ran. i've lived through an F5 tornado, a miniature hurricane on lake Winnebago in Oshkosh that demolished the city to a national disaster level, a dam breaking at my grandparent's lake house, and i've never seen anything more horrifying in my life. i am still in panic/shock state and not able to sleep. all i can say is we have probably one of the best sets of emergency teams i've ever seen in my life (or heard of), and i can't fathom how the hell they contained the fire, didn't lose more of the city, and had minimal casualities. (both of the deaths were firefighters, from what i heard, and the worst injuries were one of the cops).

also, we're all pretty much crying, because, despite being on the outskirts of a major city, our suburb is more put together and caring than the small town a third its size i grew up in where everyone was related. no one stopped to stare or get closer. every person we passed today or yesterday is out volunteering to help clean up and only approaching the rescue squads and fire and police departments to ask what other help they need. it's... really emotional to see such good in total strangers after something so awful.

just when i was losing faith in this country and humanity in general, here are all these strangers with the same mindset i have, asking anyone who's path they cross, "are you okay? is your family okay? your pets? what do you need?"

i spent the night at my boyfriend's sister's house, came back and all my pets and property were okay.

this is the aerial from the news crew here in Madison, WI. my apartment is half a block to the left of this photo, my boyfriend's house one block to the right. i am home and safe, everything was cleared for safety on my block. he's still waiting to go home.

i'm exhausted, but i'm probably going to try to help my older neighbor on the corner of my street as much as i can this week. (his house would have been just off the bottom of the screen next to the white one below, he had glass and debris all over his yard).

My last two images are the same: as my mood changes, I find I will prefer that beautiful bridal white, then I'll prefer the faintest touch of mint green. I can't decide which I like more, so I'm sharing both versions of I Will Be Your Ghost. This is one of my favorite pieces of art I've ever made, and it came out of a destroyed shot I should've deleted.
