Sketch- 40K Dreadnought Cross-section by PenUser Sketch- 40K Dreadnought Cross-section by PenUser
Hello again!

This one was made some months ago already and I have been a bit hesitant to post it, mainly because I'm not too satisfied with the concept but also due to the obvious contradictions to the official lore Wh 40K fans are sure to notice. That said, I drew this just for fun and the process can be summed up as "I just looked at the model and figured out what it looks like from the inside". The original for this was quite large, A2 size, which explains the cut in the middle which came from poorly linking the two parts of the pic in photoshop. If I were to finish this, ink it and all, that would obviously be fixed but I probably don't have time in the next months to work on this even if I'd want to.

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy it. :)

I absolutely love this piece.  Would you be opposed to me doing a colored version of it?  I'd give all due credit, of course.

Sure you can color it, not like I'll make any money from any piece related to GW IP. :D I've since inked this piece and scanned it, so maybe you'd want that version instead of this sketch? That might provide a cleaner result- I'll color this myself later on but just haven't had the time.

If you want that high-res inked piece I can send it to you, just send me a note with email and remember to credit me if you post it anywhere. :)

I really loved this when I first saw it, but I remember it was an inked version that I saw.  It even had the seam across the middle.  For the life of me I cannot find that picture.  Is there any chance you could send me the details of how to obtain an inked version please.
I can't find the inked version I have seen somewhere in my Warhammer collection.  Thank you. My Email address is available.

Dude, I am very impressed about the Dreadnought sketch, I would really love to see a sketch of a chaos corrupted dreadnought, like a Hellbrute, it would look really awesome!

I have quite a morbid fascination with Dreadnoughts so I glad to see the inside of one. Nice artwork!

I always imagined them in an amniotic fluid tank(Which Damnation Crusade by Dan Abnett tells dreadnoughts to have, referencing problems with Amniotic Fluid and Hydraulic fluid diluting a venerable bro's sleep juice) armored by the casket we see on the outside instead of semi-consiously sitting inside it. Like, more I AM A MACHINE than I NEED THIS MACHINE TO KEEP FROM BEING MORE CRIPPLED THAN STEVEN HAWKING. But nonetheless, good fuckin' work

Another inconsistency is how some 40k References the Exhausts as cooling for a powerplant/reactor while others imply it being a big fucking engine. Either works, it just needs to power the servos and hydraulics

Yeah, the lore isn't terribly accurate on whatever is inside but my thinking on this one was just to make it look like it might just work. I've had some other comments on the amniotic fluid thing and I suppose you could just add a little armoured shell around the guy which holds it but I'm not too sure on how it would translate visually. Might work in a color piece better...

Thanks! :)

Looks great! And i must promise, i didn´t find much problem with the WH40k lore. Maybe the claws was a bit long(and uselfull now), and possible the pilot is in a bit too good physical condition. This dude seems like a fake war invalid xD For a Marine, that´s just flesh wounds, he still have a mouth to bite enemys! xD But hey, that´s no real points, it looks great and make a quite realistic impression(in terms of imperial technology, what ... just make it a great approximation to the 40k stuff that wouldn´t really work fine).

Thank you, I'm glad you like it! I'll try to have these 40K pics inked and colored and made into infographics once I'm done with a large comic commission(probably done by December/January).

Wow! Amazing detail. Didn't catch the dismembered pilot until I zoomed in...

guess that saves some cockpit space! :P

It does! Sometimes they only have the brain and neural cortex intact, so even more of a space saver there. Although then you'd need more equipment to keep it alive...

Thanks! :D

Yes, I have seen that and put up my thanks for the feature in their original posting of that image. I don't mind this work being used in such contexts at all since it's just 40K fanart. I couldn't make a buck on it anyway... I'm glad people like it though! :)

Thanks!

i wasn't commenting because of money, i was more upset that they didn't leave any links back to your page. You know, "give credit where credit is due". But if you're informed about it and all ok, then all is fine :)

Oh god...Ground Control and vaguely plausible 40k redesigns, 2 of my favorite things, apparently also yours! Very cool. I had a good laugh at your point in the description essentially disclaiming that you know this may trigger some fanboys, but idk, despite being retired from the 40 tabletop game (though I play many others) I still bash a model together here and there. That said, the anatomical nightmare most marines still are and silly lack of scale consistency drives me nuts more than something like this ever could. In fact, I find this an incredibly inspiration for a dreadnought I'm rebuilding right now! Great job.

I second a comment below of possibly making anatomical-mechanical sense of Terminator armor in a similar sketch should you find the time and interest :)

Lastly, I see you graciously allow for your work to be downloaded directly..I've been away from most artmaking for awhile but focus on digital painting (one of my first works is my current profile picture should you seek to take a look) and I'd love to color this. Were I to ever post it, I would of course give you full credit with a link to this. With that being established, could I request your permission to do that? We can talk more privately if you like.

Great stuff again!

Yes, I find those things much more irritating as well but I'm sure you're well aware of the nature of some parts of the 40K fanbase... I just hate getting into arguments about whatever is the correct interpretation of the lore or if I missed some small detail exclaimed in some obscure Black Library novel which was published ages ago that would change some details, etc..  It's near impossible to maintain any consistency with the lore when making an image like this, therefore the disclaimer... ^^;

Terminator armor would be interesting, but currently I've got all my time booked until December doing commission work on a few pieces and finishing a comic album. I might try to make some 40K and GC cross-sections if I have the time, but if not I'll just upload some smaller skethings. I'll definately work on this and other similar stuff after I'm done with the album though.

Sure you can try coloring it if you like, I don't mind at all. I'll probably make this into an infographic like the Rhino pic at some point myself, but I'd like to see your take on how this should look when colored. If you color it, send me a link. Thanks! :)

Very nice sketch, but chassis is too short and pilot shouldn't be just below armor and visor, he doesn't need that visor for seeing outside.
But still, it's going into my favorites and I'm starting watching you, hoping for another cross-sections from WH40k, maybe Terminator Armour or some vehicles. :)

I love how the pilot is just integrated into the mech. Truly shows off the world it comes from and how those characters think.

I like how you've included plenty of Imperial insignia skulls on the internal components- it really captures the 40K feeling.

Well, nothing specific. I just thought what would fit here and what there and which kind of parts I can think of that would accomplish a specific task. Then I just searched my visual library(my memory that is) for shapes and parts which might fit, repeat until finished. That's the process, pretty much. The whole pic took about six hours to draw.

Thanks!
