Hi All!

Pentax has released a new firmware update for the Pentax K-5.

Go Here To Download it;…

Ver 1.13
Enhanced Compatibility for SDXC.

Ver 1.12
Apart from GPS related bug fixes other minor stability issues (such as feezing) have also been addressed via this firmware.

Enjoy =)
Pentax K-5 excels in German CoFo magazine autofocus test
This is rare and good news for Pentax:

Pentax wins a comparative AF test executed by German magazine ColorFoto, as reported in issue 09/2011 in hands now by subscribers to the magazine.

The cameras participating in the test have been:

Phase AF (in order of respective accuracy, best is first):

    Pentax K-5
    Sony Alpha A55
    Canon 7D
    Nikon D7000

The headline reads:

The phase AF fraction surprises with an outsider being their number one: Pentax focusses most accurately, ahead of Sony and even Olympus (contrast AF).

The original report contains a few benchmark figures too.

Camera    % sharp % acceptable  % not sharp
Pentax K5       62,4%    28,9%      8,6%
Sony Alpha 55  62,1%    16,4%      21,4%
Canon 7D        40,2%    29,7%      30%
Nikon D7000     35,2%    40%      24,8%

German magazine ColorFoto is the leading printed photo magazine in Germany. The AF test is their September cover story.…

This is breakthrough News for the Pentax K-5! One of the downfalls with Pentax in the past when compared to their Nikon and Canon counter parts was the snobbery about their AF being superior to the Pentax, thanks to ColorFoto we have evidence this is no longer the case.

They performed about 1300 measurements with 57 lenses on nine cameras.
10 shots using AF were taken in wide/standard/tele position with each lens.
Another picture using manual focus with optimal resolution is the reference.
The ratio of the resolutions of the pictures then serves as a measure.
Lenses used on the cameras:

Canon 7D

Canon 14/2.8
Canon 10-22/3.5-5.6
Sigma 10-20/3.5
Sigma 8-16/4.5-5.6

Is there a K7 group??

I am a professional photographer. I use a full frame for my work but I'm planning to buy a K-5 soon for my personal stuff.

It's nice to see there's a K-5 group on Deviantart, but I'm disappointed in the quality of the submissions. Is this group simply allowing every submission into the gallery? It would be nice to see some sort of moderation so only good photos are featured.

I want to submit my work to the group, but if it's going to be sitting alongside crude snapshots I won't bother.

joebbowers you don't need a full frame to do professional work! Just look at Conor Doherty or Benjamin Kanarek, they shoot fashion and they use Pentax APS-C

I have used several full frame and APS-C cameras both. While the difference may not be very significant on a computer screen at small sizes, when you view the image at higher resolutions or medium to large prints, the difference is massive. Not to mention that FF cameras typically have much better focus systems and better high ISO performance.

Thats' a fine how do you do...

Besides that, I tend to agree, when I joined this group as a contributor, I was hoping to filter out what's not up to the standards of a great dA group but as opposed to other groups I moderate, this one never sends me stuff to select...

As a contributor, I can't change that, talk to the founder...

Wanted to see if anyone had made the switch from the K20d to the K-5 and if They noticed a significant difference. Any regrets from going to the K-5? Do you need to do a lot of post processing? I have a K20d and am considering upgrading in the next few months. Thank you.

Upgrade, you won't regret it. The K-5 is several generations more advanced. It's literally the best camera in the sub-$2000 range.

Ended up getting one late last year. After all the reviews and already having the lenses, just thought it made sense, plus the rebate helped seal the decision.
