Cliodhna at Dusk

Cliodhna is featured in many celtic myths. So many that the stories of her differ quite a bit, even her identity changes from Queen of the Banshees to the goddess of beauty and love.

As a devoted sap I liked the melancholy love story where she falls in love with a mortal man, fleeing the fairy realm to be with him only to have her love story end into the waves of Glandore in South Cork. In one version of the story she drowns in her sleep, in another she is brought back to the fairy world by a wave created by a minstrel of Manannán mac Lir.

I chose to paint her by the sea, before the tragedy. As you can see the waters are calm and the day is nearing the end.

I also used a technique with sea salt rocks for the golden background, after all her story is very tied to the sea.

The Triquetra knot has been used as a symbol by christians, pagans and agnostics for centuries to represent special things
that are threefold. And many things are threefold in the celtic legends, especially love triangles are popular (Lancelot and Guinevere, to name one very well known).
The Triquetra knots in this piece symbolise healing, as Cliodhna has three birds that's song would heal the sick. (You can also see the three birds in the distance as a bit of an omen, waiting for her return to the realm of magic).

The knot's modern day use includes being a love symbol between couples, usually gifted as a trinket by a man to his loved one to symbolise the three promises of a relationship: to love, honor and protect.
This in turn ties in the legend of Cliodhna who I've chosen to present in this piece as the goddess of love and beauty.

For their background I chose blue, the colour of Ireland (I know, I thought it was green, too!).

As for the other knotting, it was my first attempt at anything more sophisticated than what I used in Storm Queen Of The Western Shore
