the Shrike by pengono the Shrike by pengono
Fan art of the Shrike, from Dan Simmons' Hyperion novels.

My professional work is mainly brightly coloured happy 3d kids stuff, so this was a nice change of pace.

Created in ArtWeaver. Painted in about 11 hours.

Currently re-reading Hyperion now. LOVE the books, I think you did an amazing job. I kind of interpreted the Shrike looking like this in my own mind and to see you pull off the same idea is just staggering. You kickass!! Very impressive! Time Tomb territory in the BG perhaps?

It is in fact the Time Tombs. I always pictured them wrapped in a sand storm and out of focus.

This definitely shows the dangerous nature of the thing.
Awesome job!
Let's hope if they ever get around to actually making
the movie they don't fuck it up.

nice. Been years since I read that saga... but I still remember how sincerely creepy the Shrike was. You got that!

awesome drawing! it doesn't really fit the book's description but hey, the concept itself is nice

Oh yeah? That's weird; I made it based specifically on the first two books' descriptions, but I made the lower arms stabby-er. What'd I miss?

Nice work! Although this is very fitting the books descriptions it is not completely right. The chest should be solid and smooth with spikes...or the arms should be longer and should have more joints. I like the general creepiness of this one but I feel he should have more stoic stand and expression (he was very often compared to a huge statue).

I think a big problem with the books description of the Shrike though, is that it's not very easy to actually illustrate outside of imagination. Especially because it's explicitly said to have scalpel-like extensions in the wrist and prominent thorns from the head and chest.
It's designed to stir up the visualisation, not the visual appearance. I think if there was actually an illustration that matched the text description, it'd be quite...goofy? Just because so many of it's traits don't match together so well.

I agree that it would be extremely difficult to effectively implement all the atributes but I don't think it is impossible...for example this one looks very much by the books descriptions (although there are few minor mistakes) and it looks amazing IMHO.
