From the description of Lily's death in Deathly Hallows.

I've wanted to draw this for awhile and finally got around to it. I figured she must have heard James' death on her way up the stairs and probably had a split second of horror at loosing her husband before mustering some courage to keep going and protect her son.

This is a rather morbid one, but I meant more to focus on her bravery and maternal strength rather than her death.

I thought a lot about mothers as I was drawing this one, so I suppose that means it's dedicated to all of them.

In the seventh book it describes her running up the stairs to Harry who was already in his crib.

actually, I think you might be right. It describes James handing Harry to Lily and then Voldemort shows up. I suppose she could have put Harry down upstairs and came back to the living room, but that's pretty unlikely. Thanks for pointing it out!
